Default Oil Leak After Change??? NOW FIXED!!!!!!!

Just got my oil changed last Friday and I am getting a good (maybe a fist sized puddle) amount of oil leaking from the filter area in front of the right rear wheel. Anything I should look for?

might be residual oil that was never wiped up after replacing the oil filter..

Default ...try this?

If the leak does not stop after you have cleaned it up: Siphon the oil out of the tank into a pristine clean container. Pull the filter and inspect it. Reattach the filter if the seal is undamaged. You may have kinked the seal during installation. Also check your tank plug seals. But definitely save that oil. Alternatively, you could drain the oil into a pristine clean container too instead of siphon.

They may not have replaced the crush ring when they drained the tank..

As you had the oil changed at a shop, I assume, you could take it back to them to figure out. It still would be good to know what is wrong.

Santa is bringing me a scissors lift so I will be doing the oil service from now on. I could use all the info I can!

Cheers Good Luck!

Lift & secure the car adequately to remove the plastic trays, etc under the RR quarter - the objective being to expose the oil reservoir and large filter. Clean out excess oil with rags and mineral spirits/aerosol can of 'brake cleaner'/etc.
As the reservoir is unpressurized, a leak source will be evidenced as fresh oil by simply waiting - but if lucky, there is no leak, and you have cleaned up some a$$wipes mess that shouldn't have been left for you.

Five bucks says they left off the sealing washer. Ask me how I know. Exact same symptom.

If you take off the fender liner like Garth said, you can plainly see whether or not the washer is there.

Do you have an undertray? If so, did they remove the under tray when changing the oil? I had my oil changed 1x and they never removed the under tray and drained oil on it. Got home and noticed a decent sized puddle had accumulated while parked on the slope of my driveway.

Brought it back, they appolgized for not cleaning up their mess. Never went back to that shop and they lost my business because of sloppy work.

It was all excess oil running off the under tray.

the drain plug has a taper out to a lip to help center the sealing washer which I think is part of why it doesn't seal without it (kind of ironic). Make sure if someone besides you gets under there they don't just try to tighten it up more. They'll just hose up your drain plug.

I let mine drip for about 2K miles. That was quite a while ago. Still cleaning oil off of the right side suspension...

I had a similar problem after an oil change by an independent. Turned out they 'forgot' the crush ring on the oil filter that is located in front of the rear wheel.

Hey where the h3ll were you on Sunday?? We forged through driving rain and snow all the way from PA to beat the car up on the roads of MD and had a great time. As far as the DIY on the oil change I just didn't feel like messing with it and I still am nervous about getting the car up on 4 jackstands. BTW I only have 2 stands at this point!!

You can always drive it back into my garage so I can do it for you.. Of course I may have to keep it for a while to check for any leaks....I hope you are enjoying the car..

HAHA... Hey Al! We had a great drive on Sunday and I put just under 300 miles on the car ansd it just gets better every mile. I want to get the car cleaned up and this weekend try to figure out where the leak is coming from. Check out the pix under scheduled events on 6Speed or here at the end of the Fall Drive thread.
