Default Stage 2 mods from Imagine Auto for 993. Opinions

Thinking about getting this for the car? Comes with the air box, "chip" for the ECU (GIAC) and Max flow mufflers. Price is $1760.00 for all three. Wondering if will really make a difference. The GIAC mod to the ECU is a "chip". Simple install? Any thoughts. Just looking for an opinion. Thanks for any replies.

Air box takes 1 minute to install, chip takes 30 minutes to install (being very careful), and mufflers take an hour and a half to install. All very easy to do. As for bang for buck, that's subjective - I drilled my stock airbox, got a GIAC chip from AWE tuning for $300, and got RSR mufflers for $400. That's about $1000 cheaper than what you're looking at, for the same benefit. Just my $.02

Thanks man. Not to drill on a simple topic. The chip. Any draw backs. Don't want the car acting up. Also the airbox. I'm just not to knowledge on tuning products.

Mel,
Here are my humble thoughts after practically living on this board for the last two years and enjoying the hell out of my '95:

There's not too much one can improve on with the stock airbox and stock Mahle filter. It's been discussed over & over again. Drilling the stock cover, or picking up a Motorsound cover yields a bit of noise - but no power. Mine came with the Motorsound cover - it sounds nice.

I think the stock exhaust system sounds great - for day to day use. People swear by the RSR mufflers and the FisterD/LPMM mufflers for an enhanced listening experience. I've read one too many comments regarding the fit of Fabspeed mufflers... If I were to seek a louder exhaust, I'd probably send my nice clean, polished cans to Darin Fister for a make-over.

My car came with a Weltmeister chip. I drove it like this for nearly a year and a half before pulling it and re-installing the stock chip. Why? During mild or warm weather, my 993 would ping under even moderate acceleration. Since this car will stay with me until I assume room temperature, thoughts of engine damage were keeping me up at night. Once I replaced the stock chip and let the car sort itself for a few days, I realized that it ran great, In fact, I could not tell a difference in power! I have never heard another ping, period. It willingly winds past 6,500 rpm and is a blast to drive.

So there you have it. While chips, cold air kits and fart cans are all the rage in the Fast & Furious circles, I think Porsche got it right when they designed the 993.

I would have to agree with Andreas on the chip. Unless you can get 93 octane or better gas, don't bother. I put my stock chip back in a couple weeks ago after running a 911chips.com (Steve Wong) chip for about 6 months. Too much pinging, too much worry. I don't notice any loss of power going back to the stock chip, probably because I don't worry about flooring it anymore!

Why not just buy a spare engine and be done with it?

Seriously, Mel, I never had any pinging issues with the Rennsport Systems/GIAC chip that I had in my car. You can bet, if and when I move to C class, I'll be calling Steve Weiner to send over a 100 octane chip. The chips work, but the difference is not night and day.

TheOtherEric did a DAS-based test that showed an open, cup-style airbox yielded a few more ponies. To me, that's better than it taking away a few ponies.

I'm with you Andreas. I actually like the sounds of my car right now. Has motor sound with Ruf tips.

Thanks Mark. I have to agree. Some gain to me is not bad for $600. Just want to make sure I don't hurt the car. Honestly I don't know much about air boxes and chips. I can get 93 octane at both Exxon stations near my house.

Hey Mark sorry for going back and forth on that Ford GT issue the other night. The beer was getting the best of me. LOL.

My pinging issues happened with 93, 91, whatever. I'm happy with my de-tuned dung beetle.

To be more specific, it was a few hp at higher rpms (like over 4500 rpm).

At any rate, don't worry about these mods hurting your car. People haven't reported any problems with the GIAC chip. And the airbox and muffler are really just for sound; you won't really get more than maybe a couple hp from those, if that.

If I'm not mistaken, sport cats will get you a bit of actual hp while reducing weight.

Do a search for DACH. No personal experience here. Yet.

Not to be a ****, but I gotta ask (cuz I couldn't find it on their web site), if airbox, mufflers and a chip is "Stage 2", what is "Stage 1"? Air freshener and fuzzy dice?
