After reading all of the recent threads (#1#2#3) about how the A/C belt robs valuable power, I decided to take it one step further. I went to the garage and simply cut the A/C, cooling fan, and alternator belts in half and tossed them in the trash. That left the power steering belt (who really needs power steering?). I had to get the car on jack stands in order to remove the cover over the power steering belt. Then it took a few seconds to saw through the belt with an old hacksaw blade. Put the cover back on, got the car back on four wheels and took it for a drive.
All I can say is, "WOW!" I think I easily gained 50 hp! I took it on a favorite loop and was floored at the power that I uncorked by eliminating these stupid belts. The steering was actually manageable, and the A/C is for poseurs anyway. A few miles into my shakedown cruise, the car died. I guess my battery was not strong enough to sustain the ignition. So I picked up a new battery and motored home.
I am so thrilled with this improvement and can easily justify a few batteries every month if it means freedom from the belts.

Try sixth gear at 1200 rpm without those belts, a symphony of sound!
I tried that and it sounded nice, but then I mashed the go pedal in third gear and found that the engine would easily spin to 7,500 rpm. It's just amazing how much power these stupid belts have cost us over the years.
I will try to organize a group buy on Interstate MTP-91 batteries.
I did the same thing about a month ago and found that the oil temperature was always pegged at the 11pm position after 5 minutes of running it and then the engine would simply shut off.??? weird.
Maybe the engine tray is causing it to overheat? Or should I put back the fan belt on? or maybe the wide open throtle operation at 1500 RPMS could be the culprit?
But boy...for the few minutes that it runs before it shuts down, it feels very powerful!
