Default What transmission oil for LFW?

What transmission oil should be used in a C2 after LFW and new clutch is installed? I woul like something to quite the chatter a bit and give fairly smooth shifts.

The mechanic is very adverse to Mobil 1 for some reason but will put in what I say to put in. So... what would you recommend for quite operation?

I don't know it will make too much difference to the noise, I have just had a flush and refill with Mobil1 75/90 the gearox is slightly smoother in operation...but sadly just as loud and rattly

the noise will stay unless you go back to stock dual mass flywheel, nature of the beast.

Hi Mike,

when I did mine, I search a lot on the forum about which oil to put in with a LWF. I don't remember all the inputs involved, but they drove me to put Mobil 1 into the gearbox.
Since then , it works perfectly. Of course the noise is there when not being up to an ennoying level.
Enjoy your mods!

Cheers

Mike: Doing research on the same topic here and on the DE and Racing forum, I found most track cars with LWF use Mobil 1 75/90 Delvac. Hard to get but some claimed it will significantly reduce the LFW chatter. I bought Delvac and will be trying it on my next fluid change.

Got my M1 75/90 via these guys... I bought the SHC that was available last year.

No affiliation though they did send me a Christmas card last December
Seriously. They did.

I'm also using the Lufteknic-sourced Delvac. I swapped it at the same time as the LWF so I can't tell anything about reduced noise. It did somewhat improve shifting quality over whatever was in the box but the trans still sounds like someone dropped a bucket of dimes in there at idle, especially when hot. Not a major problem for me but it drives some guys crazy.

(The trans also makes a good deal of noise if you lug the car but that's one more reason not to lug it!)

How would gear oil (in transmission) have an impact on the noise from a LWF (bellhousing)? I'm having a hard time seeing a relationship. IMWTK

Went to Mobil 1 75/90 thgis winter... I find it is quieter than the track fluid I had before. Then again, i probably lost 2 HP with the thicker fluid. Oh well...

Bill - the noise comes from the gearbox itself, the countershaft specifically IIRC.

Try Mobilube PTX available from any Porsche dealership. If you can't find that then try Mobilube SHC/Delvac and if you can't find that then try regular Mobil Gear lube. But with your stock gearbox definitely try the PTX before the SHC. I've heard of several cases now where problems have popped up after filling with SHC and then the problems disappearing after switching back to the dealer/factory fill!

Thanks everyone for input!

Searching the archives, it appears that Redline MTL-R was also suggested, albeit no longer available from whatever guys were mixing it together in their garage. Does that mean that the regular MTL is not suggested?

Also if I go with dealer's fluid instead of Delvac, how much should I get (4 quarts?) and what does it cost nowadays?

I'm going against the grain here. My mechanic agrees with your mechanic. He says synthetic oil cannot handle the impact loads or stresses of transmissions (or something like that). I can't argue, since I don't know exactly what he's talking about, but per his recommendation, I am using Swepco mineral based gear oil. FWIW, I have NO rattle with my LWF.

I used SWEPCO on both my 95 993 and my 96 993 with great results. If the M1 Delvac doesn't work, that's what I'll be going back to.
