Default HID Xenon conversion - branded or not? - 4300k ?

I have been thinking of doing the HID upgrade for a while and just decided to go for it.

I looked in the old posts and can only find 3+ years old posts on the topic. As to what I see the prices have dropped significantly recently so that one can get a philips 4300k kit for less than 400 usd. Is it worth the extra $ compared to the non branded items?

Any recommendation on 4300k vs 6000k or other?

Any comments is welcome!

thanks,
pierre

Hey Pierre...I have the Vertex aftermarket one's through the group buy here on RL. I waited for thr 4300's as I saw a fellow RL member with the 6000's and I felt they were too "blue", now that I have the 4300's, I am very happy.

Based on a fellow Rennlister (Caveman's) reccomendation I bought the following aftermarket kit:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=130068059907

The kit is now down to $99.00. I was able to install it in about two hours and they have worked fine for the past three months. I have xenons in my other cars and I prefer the 6000k's slight blue tint.

I have a set of XenonWorkX in my WRX and love them but need a projector housing instead of the reflective housing. When I get the 993 back I intend to put the same kit in it as well.

I'd say go with 4300, its the color least likely to produce fatigue in the eye as it resembles natural light closer than the rest and is what a lot of stock HID cars use

I just put in the Vertex (4300K) a month ago. Color is the same as a 997. Vertex kit included replacement rear headlight assembly covers that fit so no drilling was necessary, which is unlike the experience of some listers from a few years back. I felt comfy going with a company that has support of Rennlist.

Working the cables through the fenders into the trunk through the stock rubber grommets took a bit of effort and a few broken chopsticks (to thread through the grommet and stretch it out) and I eventually ended ripping the rubber, but with a little premade bicycle tire repair patch, I covered up most of the tears.

Absolutely great upgrade!

If you use the search function, you will find the "Vertex HID" thread and it will give you the contact person there. I would call and ask if they will still honor the Rennlist price and I would bet they would. Great people to work with...no affiliation blah, blah. Good luck.

Quite a few 'listers have gone the no-name route (myself included), and found you could buy two sets (one set as backup) for the same $400 total...

If you get the right ballast/igniter boxes you can even fit the whole lot inside the headlamp assembly too...

https://rennlist.com/forums/993-forum/336973-aftermarket-hids.html

There was even a thread questioning the "wiseness" of putting this all in there... and it was established that the temp difference was negligible anyway... can't find that one right now though...

Edit... here it is https://rennlist.com/forums/993-forum/340297-torrance-ca-aftermarket-hids.html

vertex seems like a fair deal - 269$ - I'll take the night to think about it and then...
thanks,

Default HID

went the vertex route also but I wrapped the ballasts in some heavy foam and wedged them in the fenders, they don't seem to get that warm to cause a problem.Couldn't get myself to drill the inner fenders

I understand that HIDs are single beam only (meaning high beams are disabled). Is that true? And has anyone had any inspection issues?

Thanks,

KrS

Disabled? No, the high beams are a separate bulb.

So high beams are HID but the standard low beams are retained? What is the best route for lowbeams,? Just get a matching color temp PIAA bulb so it doesn't look like a disco when you are flashing someone?

No no no! You've got it backwards. Lots of threads already about this topic. If you're new to the idea, definitely do some reading here and you'll get all the details and pros and cons.
