Default G50/31 Gearbox Installed -WOW!

After purchasing a G50/31 RS box from a fellow Rennlister with only 1000 miles on it and STILL under warranty, I finally got it in the car today... I am SERIOUSLY impressed! Any fellow 993 owners with the chance to re-gear to RS specs will not be disappointed....the feeling is like finding an extra 50 HP.

What took me off guard the most, however, was how tall first gear is. It just keeps going and going...

/30 is the Cup Box...I'm sure Bill will post the ratio chart.

Cool. Seems to me the tall 1st would make driving in heavy traffic a bit trickier. OTOH, you can actually downshift into 1st for tight corners, which you cannot really do with the stock 1st.

Good point Bruce...it certainly seems tall enough to downshift into in a tight, slow corner (25-30mph)

Awesome. I had made a comment a few weeks ago that 2nd gear in my stock gear box felt too tall and Bill replied that the problem wasn't 2nd, it's 1st and 3rd. It would indeed be nice to have a taller 1st so the rpms wouldn't fall out when shifting into 2nd. (Haven't got around to thinking too much about 3rd yet - I'm only doing autox's so far and rarely have a chance to get into 3rd).

How much might one expect to save by buying a gently used G50/31 vs. a brand new one, assuming the opportunity presented itself a 2nd time? What's a brand new one cost?

BTW, I think your car and Bill's car are probably the two most exciting cars I've seen on this board- Kudos.

Shannon-

Thanks for the compliment, but Bill has gone one step further than I with the RS motor. However, ViperBob may be addressing my lacking in this department soon.

I can tell you that the G50/31 box is about $9k new from Porsche Motorsport without core exchange. The gearbox I purchased off Rennlist was the only one I have ever seen for sale, and it was at a very healthy discount from the Porsche Motorsport sticker price. Bill, I am sure, has seen others.

I have heard that Gert can be an excellent source for such items. In any case, I wish I had done this mod long ago.

Up next for me is sunroof removal in 2 weeks and engine work...then I'm done (yeah right). :-)

They are as rare as hen's teeth used and as noted above very expensive(and getting more so daily), but it is the single best change I made in my car. Even the factory has a very limited and often depleted supply.

You can regear, w/ for example GT gears @ ~$800 a set, but you don't get the steel syncros, long 1 and PMS lsd

Unfortunately sometime in the MY95 run they started using an integral 1 and 2, prior to that they had an integral 1, those gears are far more expensive to change, so even w/ an early '95 box you can't reasonably get the long 1 and on most neither 1 nor 2 can be easily changed.

The best setups are the /30 for mostly track and the /31 or /21 for some track and sporty street and lastly the trans Chris Cervelli built for Leland which is a very slick combo that sits in the middle of /30 and /31

ps last I heard Leland was considering selling his trans, don't know what his decision may have been but his trans is also very well done.

It's a lot easier to take than the cost of a full 3.8RS, the /30 is even worse. /21 w/ almost /31 gears is easier to take.
