What took me off guard the most, however, was how tall first gear is. It just keeps going and going...

Congratulations! If the $11k price quote is correct, I'm feeling pretty good right now. :-)
While it may be considered a step down by some, I believe the standard 964 5speed is a better geared box than the 993 6speed. A low cost viable option that would work quite well the the additional power and torque of the 993.

Oh trust me, its correct....and as Bill said the Cup Box is even higher...and what is even more nuts is the cost of such Porsche Motorsports items keeps going UP! Last time I checked (out of curisotiy) the /30 and /32 Box was almost 12k!
Now that I have this /31 gearbox, it has become very clear that the /20 gearbox doesnt do the 993 justice at all. Truly night and day. When this box came up for sale, I was in "talks" to re-gear my tranny to RS specs, but I came out better with a true /31 box and the PM LSD.
I cant reccommed the mod enough for those looking to make their 993 come "alive."

AC,
I'll amend someone else's comment to say you and Bill have two of the nicest sportscars on Rennlist. This is how these cars should have been allowed to be optioned. And still should.
The two cars would make a great photo shoot together.
Best,
Noah

Congrats. Nice to read your feedback in light of the fact that my new car that I'll be coming home to soon, as I'm away now, has a regeared tranny.

Personally I find the ratios fit better much better than the 31 I previously had, particularly when you change from 5th to 6th at 6500 rpm....with 31 the car seemed to stop accelerating and speed sort of crept up!

Interesting thread: for street use, a taller first gear in the standard /20 box would better suit my needs. It sounds as if the 1st & 2nd gear clusters must be replaced as a unit: is that correct? - for I have a '96 G64/20 on the bench, and installing the taller (45mph) 1st gear sounds very appealing.
Should I ask the ~ price of parts?
