Hi,

I have obtained a spare Rev Counter with OBC dispaly from a friend who's display went on the blink, he bought a new one and has since sold the car, so has given it to me. Mine is fine for the moment apart from the odd flicker, but I'd like to repair it just in case.

I have changed the bulb, but short of removing my steering wheel and swaping them over, is there a quick way to test the display? Maybe applying voltage to certain pins on the gauge or something?

I just wondered whether or not you found a solution to the slight flicker on your OBC display. I have an issue with mine. It works fine for a while and then periodically the digits on the display don't display properly. A quick tap on the guage face and the numbers come back to life.

Any ideas???

I have the exact same issue and a tap on the gauge clears it up. I suspect a loose solder joint that I will never be able to track down.

If I ever figure it out I will certainly share.... hopefully someone has already been there?
So far all I have found in searches is a replacement at approx. $1K.

Hi Gabi,

I managed to track down a (UK) specialist that reckons they can repair the intermittent lighting on the computer display. I can dig out the contact details if you want them. They said the turnaround time was six weeks.

OBC digital display failed short circuit on Diode 1N4118 located on the inferior printed circuit (LCD array) of the OBC.
Warning: The steering wheel needs to be dismounted in order to take the OBC out. There should be DIY here that describe this operation so please read first. Disconnect the battery at least 15 minutes before and shorten the + and - wires so that there is no remaining energy in the cars circuits, because of the Airbag mounted on the steering wheel.

Thanks for the input. When you say "shorten" do you mean touch them together? Just checking! How easy is it to identify this diode?

Yes touch them together to avoid any remaining energy in the circuit. Radio for example...
In a german porsche forum they also check for loose solder joint which seem quit common...
For the Diode 1N4118 location i cant help you much since i have no photo of the boards for the moment. This is not so super integrated circuit stuff as they produce today. Search on Google for Diode 1N4118 and you see how that diode looks like and purchase one in an electronics shop and if you are not familiar with soldering etc. find somebody or send the unit to fhp-chiptuning.de.
They repair for fixed costs of 129€ and offer this service very often on ebay in germany.
