Cost is just the cost of the HID kit. The one I got is < $150 shipped. Time is less than 1 hour, even with someone who's not done it before.

Thanks Chris. I'm definitely going to do this mod then, as it sounds like a bargain. If I'm not mistaken, doing a litronic conversion on the 996 is a lot more expensive for some reason.

IS IT NORMAL THAT:

I need to run the engine for the HID light to come on? If I just turn the ignition a bit to get power, the light is eother weak or doesnt come on (sometimes)?

maybe the ballast needs the extar power?

TIA

Thanks again everyone. I installed my HIDs tonight. The install was very simple (thanks to the instructions on this string) and the result is amazing. I can finally see at night!

I had that happen when the battery was run down. What shape is your battery in?

This is a great thread. A question: When 'installing' the ballasts in the trunk, is there a grommet you punch out that provides the hole required for the wires? Sorry if I missed this in my search-I'm sure I did.
Thanks in advance,
chuck

There is a grommet you can punch a hole through, or you can just pop it out and run the wires around it.

The newer kits, with the slim digital ballast, you can just cram everything into the headlight itself, it's tight but a much simpler install, takes about 10 minutes total, and can be reversed to the original bulb just as quickly. With the larger ballast you either have to mess with the headlight wiring harness to keep the headlights easily removable, or disconnect the wiring everytime you need to pull the assembly.

I have heard that the cheap $100 slim kits on Ebay have some issues with quality of the ballasts, but I think people here have used them successfully. I ordered a more expensive kit with (allegedly) a better ballast, it was $230 shipped. I could have ordered two cheap kits and had the spares, but mine works so far.

Quick question. One supplier in the UK is supplying 55W HID bulbs. Will the ballast support these or would I need new ballasts?

Intuitively, a 35 watt (I think that's what all the old kits are?) would not be able to handle a 55 watt bulb as it's such a big difference. The Chinese kits are so cheap on Ebay you might just as well get one of those and get a second set as a spare?

Cheers,

David

55 Watt real hids? Do tell...

Are you sure they're not halogen bulbs (which are commonly 55W) branded as Xenon or similar marketing nonsense?

That's also what I thought. If they were HIDS the vendor would probably be selling a whole package with the ballasts.

Just a follow up- I received great service and a complete plug and play package w/ 4300k bulbs, with a year warrantee on the bulbs and three years on the ballasts from a company called DistantXtremes Lighting. The owner David Key is a pro and knows the product exceptionally well.

Highly recomended!! (of course, no affiliation)
