Default Rear Window Plastic Trim Issue-Are you having this issue?

Are any of you having issues with that plastic channel piece that surrounds the rear window cracking or breaking? Side effect is the rear seal doesnt stay on properly. Mine is cracked and pieces broke in the lower right corner.

I know that the piece is integrated to the window and pretty much come to the conclusion that there are 2 fixes.

1. Replace the window-guess probably about $900 to do that with labor.
2. Have a knowledgable glass company replace the pastic trim.

Amazing what pain a little piece of plastic can be.

Yup, I've had the exact problem. Has been discussed before. My solution was to get some window strip adhesive (permatex brand IIRC from pep boys, basically yellow contact cement) and squirt it into the channel, put the rubber strip in place, and duct tape it in place until dry. Has worked fine for a year now.

No way would I replace the window, due to cost and risk. (people have had rear windows blow out due to improper installs)

Im having a windshield replaced on my Explorer at this very moment and thats exactly what the guy told me. He's going to be doing my windshield on my C4 in the next few weeks. Should have hit 2 birds with 1 stone but only scheduled the Explorer.

Its been a string of bad rock chips on 2 of my vehicles.

Thanks..

I am new to Rennlist so please excuse any clumsiness or other dorkeyness on my part. I have the same problems with the deteriorating plastic piece around the rear window. Is anyone arare of a plastics manufacturer that could make a small run of a u-shaped channel (to fit the glass) with v-shaped groove (to fit the outer trim piece) that could be cut to length and glued to the glass? It might not be ideal but better than buying a new window. There might be a small market for such as I suspect that as these cars age there will be more demand. More and more of these cars will need rehab, paint etc which will lead to glass removal.

Is the problem this thread referring to where the exterior rear window trim unseats itself slightly? My rear window trim does this. No leaks but it's annoying.

While it's probably doable, it's not worth your time... if you want to fix it right, replace the rear window and at the same time check for/repair rust.

Have exactly the same problem. Would try the glue solution but I'm thinking of repainting the car so....
