Default HID's OMG!

Are genuine litronic HID's $4,600!! I know most people who own these cars are professionals....but WTF! My Performance Products catalog lists each light at $2,295...there must be good alternatives for reasonable $$. Thoughts anyone? I'm new to this world so I need all the help I can get.

Phone Vertex, ask for Charles, say you are from Rennlist, and order the HID kit...just over $200 and it works well.

Use the search function with "HID" and spend a few hours reading about it....but I would forget about the factory option since its nutty expensive and go with the cheap kit, I have one and it works great.

Cheers,

Mike

Mike J--

Thanks for the information . The standard lights are horrible...if I tried hard enough I'm sure the car could catch up to them! This community is simply incredible!!

I've got factory HIDs on mine. PO had it installed. Seller did mention they were HK$30,000 (installed at OPC in HK) - ie the US$4k sounds about right.

I second the Vertex lights.

The standard lights are horrible.
Do make sure they're aimed correctly. I thought they were horrible, but after proper aiming, it turns out they're only very bad.

RallyJon-- thanks for the tip, but are you still running with OEM? If not, what did you replace them with?

Mark in Baltimore-- thanks for the compliment. the OEM lights are frustrating in a car of this caliber. it's like they installed two FLASHLIGHTS up front.

Mike J-- I'm scouring the HID thread as you suggested. So far, the Vertex option is looking promising.

Best thing I did for my car, well, except for the new steering wheel.
Here's my install:

Here's a link to the work it took to get it done!

That is about the current MSRP for the MY97 litronics including the electronics, the MY96 version is ~$1k less and if you shop around you can buy them for less than half that price. Performance products has a nice catalog but I would never buy anything OE from them (I use to), their prices are out of this world...

I just bought the Vertex too and will be installing them next week. After seeing them on Mike's car I was sold.

Steve 96C4S, appreciate the help. I've read with pure enjoyment your trials and tribulations with the MY02 shifter and handbrake! BTW, they look gorgeous. Exactly what brand are those lights? And where did you get them?? Online, or Bricks and Mortar?

I finally got mine fitted today and just did a test drive. What an improvement! I made up brackets, similar to Chris Walrod's design to avoid drilling any holes. The brackets hang off of the earthing bolt and one of the bolts to hold the light holder lever thingy on each side. I can do some pictures during the week. I've done mine in such a way that I can easily use the regular halogen bulbs if anything goes wrong.

Cheers,

David

I got mine through the internet. Someone here recommended them about 2 years ago when I did mine.

I managed to mount the ballasts on the inside of the trunk without drilling any holes or making up brackets...I used the double sided adhesive that the mounting brackets come with and found flat spots. I seem to remember the left side of the car is more challenging...

I also used a plug connector so that I can disconnect the entire light easily and pull it out of the body. I used a (gasp!!) GM style connector that have good waterproofing ability. I took the power from close to the connector in the fenders rather than cut any lines using a "T" clamp type connector.

And yes, they make a hell of a difference. I don't ue my high beams anymore...when I flick the high beams on they just add a yellow pallor to the light ahead and not much more reach.

I am thinking of adding them to the high beam side as well...you can still "flick" the lights but it would be much slower and maybe be hard on the bulbs/ballast, but that would give you awesome high beams!!

Cheers,

Mike
