Edward,

You are a track hound. The Cayman is a superb track car. Mooty tells me he carries 5+ MPH into the corners in a Cayman. That is huge. You may want to try this out yourself.

Tony,

You are bad influence....

Excellent looking car and pics Pong, enjoy the new Cayman in good health.

P.S. I am interested to hear your comments on the Cayman's shifter. Too smooth maybe.

Right this minute the shifter is bad news. Is is almost like someone installed the shifter at 180 degree off the intended position. In neutral, it sits far to the right, and I have a hard time finding first and third gears. In neutral there is a lot of play (up and down, not sideways) and once off the true neutral position, I hit a cog and the shifter won't engage. I could not shift 4 to 3 at all. Wait for the speed to fall enough and shift to 2, then up to 3. Pretty screwed up. All the other Caymans that I test drove shifted like a dream. I guess my test drive when I picked up the car was too short and I did not notice the flaw. Upshifting was not a problem at all.

I took it in and tried out other Cayman shifters and none is like mine. The shop foreman looked at mine and said something is definitely wrong. I have an appointment on Wednesday to bring it in for warranty repair. Hopefully it is just a installation issue. I will know a lot more Wednesday afternoon.

That is the bad news for now. Hope to have better news soon.

Great looking car.Was there a reason for not getting a Cayman S ? I sold my 993 C2S on Saturday and considering 4 different Porsches,993 TT,996 TT,05 997 or a Cayman S.As I get older though I don't have the patience for the issues with 993's and looking hard at the Cayman S.It will never look as good as the Widebodied 993'S but the Cayman S is fast, smooth and at this point,no issues.

The reason to skip the Cayman S is the $10k price difference. Most of the 06 CS left are heavily optioned. Even at $10k off, they come to roughly $58k. Now I paid $46.8k for the base Cayman and it's a great price. I can order an 07 zero-option Cayman S for about $1,500 over invoice, and that's still $10k difference ($9k difference in MSRP and 8.25% sales tax). So I took the economy route.

Since I am keeping my Ruf BTR it really doesn't matter if my daily driver has 295 HP or 245 HP. So I opted for the lower running cost of the base unit.

Hope this answers your question.

BTW, love your BMW CSi. It is one of my all -time favorite designs, the fore-runner to the classic M6. Hope to see it in person one day.

Mike,

The shifter matter is a downer. However, I am sure it is an easy fix. In fact. I had the same thing happen when I installed the SSK in my M5. Swap it 180 degrees and all was good. Interesting that the factory did not catch such a silly mistake and still shipped the car though.

Hahaha, LOL, Pong!!! I don't even have the time/dough at the moment to get my lowly little SC-trackmeister on the track. The Cayman is a real beaute AND a performer, indeed, but no means to make such a lofty jump I "hope" to get back out in the next month. Take care, and enjoy her in the best of health, bud!

Great looking car! I'm taking my 993 to the dealer I purchased it from in November for repair of a scratch and they have a Cayman loaner for me. Unfortunately, the 2 hour drive home is not on California Rte 1 or anything even close. Instead it's straight down, and I do mean straight!, I-57. The 2 lanes are even straighter than the interstates in these parts...

Pong,

Congratulations on the purchase. Sounds like a well thought out and wise decision. Did you order it with the badge delete option or do it after the fact?

Dave,

It was a car on the dealer's inventory (not special order). It came with the batch delete option. Neither the salesman or I knew that. I saw that when I walked into the dealership, and was pleasantly surprised. As I said, with the duel chrome exhaust (an option that I did not want but could not delete, but eventually am happy with), and the batch delete, it makes for an unusual-looking rear for a base Cayman.

Ideally I'd want bi-xenon and sports steering wheel. Unfortunately, all the bi-xenon cars have the preferred package plus option with it, and virtually no dealer specs a sports steering wheel. I then realized that I can count on one hand the times I will drive this car after dark, so it is easy to save the $1k+ and skip the bi-xenon. The dealers offer less discount on an ordered car so I ruled that out as well.

I am extremely happy with what I have now.

Pong, you could always swap the bulbs out to HID types like you did with your RUF.
