I searched, but didn't find an answer I liked (actually I dind't find many answers at all)

What battery fits the easiest? I don't need a fancy special order batter, I had something from Sears or Pep Boys in mind.

I put the Optima red top in my 993 probably three years ago. It doesn't have to be vented; it doesn't ooze caustic anything. I've been happy.

You can purchase a Sears Die Hard battery that fits. They call it an international model and they typically have them in stock.

I went with an Interstate battery earlier this year. I think it's a group 48 size. Fit perfect.

ubterstate would have to be my pick. dont waste $$ on a dry cell. they're good for off roading, thats about it. since they have coiled lead plates as opposed to standard, they are too thin and have no reserve power. (good cranking power though) wouldn't recommend it

A standard group 48 works - I had to trim a 1/4" of plastic lip back to allow the +ve terminal to fit correctly .... one swipe with a utility knife.

I have used Interstate batteries in my cars, 993s, other Porsches, Benz, etc., and NEVER have I been dissapointed. Current Interstate in the C2S is on year 7.

Optima red top from Costco. I've had them in my 911SC and in my 993, no problems.

Once a non-sealed battery pukes in your Porsche, you will become a big fan of Optima...

Couldn't agree more...
I spent many hours cleaning up after a previous owner's neglect. Vent tube not connected, leakage around and under the battery.
The Optima was one of the best decisions I've made. No vent, no risk.

OK dumb question - Can you trickle charge the Optima Red Top when storing over winter?

I've been using the Sears International #48, and change it every 3 years. So in 9 years replaced 3 batteries. The #48 fits perfectly. I am sure can get much more use, but for about $100 is cheap insurance for potential problems. I have extended the venting tube, placed a battery mat underneath, and check the battery every couple of months. The battery is normally on tickle charge as the car is not driven daily. I thought about the Optima, which I am sure is excellent, but the acid battery has worked well for me with a little preventive maintenance.

BTW, for my Volvo that takes #48 (same size), I bought a Costco battery for $39.00 or $49.00, and it has been fine, and is now 3 years old, and will replace soon. I recall there are only three wet battery manufactures. Who knows if Costco and Sears and others may come from same manufacture.

It might take some modification, but I'm always conscious of weight (in my car, LOL). But I had good luck with Braille batteries... 11.5lbs, shaved about 30lbs from in front off the wheels on my old Volkswagen R32.. car handled noticeably better. Check them out HERE
