Entertaining thread, to say the least.

For me, the 'African-American' and 'woman' thing was useful to the story in that it helped me to formulate a better stereotypical mental image. I think more details would have helped. You know - huge ***, false nails, lots of fake jewelry, big sunglasses, silly hat, tons of attitude, pronounced 'ask' as 'aks' - that sort of stuff.

I do have a question though... How on earth did the police find her? I mean, aren't they all supposed to look alike?

I guess that's another myth dispelled.

I note that all of JustAnotherRed993's posts have disappeared. He must've realised that his name was offensive to American-Indians. Who knows, maybe he'll show up again sometime in the future JustAnotherOversensitiveBlack993...

To categorize a person as "African-American" or "xxxx-American" means they're neither; and must be pretty insulting if your family has lived in the US for generations & generations.

Was the idiotic driver's ethnicity, gender or colour relevant in telling this story? No. Did Pong mention it because he's a racist or sexist? Well, he's no more racist or sexist than the rest of us. Let's be honest, we all like to perpetuate certain stereotypes...

If the story had been: “The driver was quite intent to just leave. Then one guy jumped in the driver's window and grabbed the steering wheel. Finally the MB stopped, and of course it was an Asian female driving.”, I'd hope we'd be having this same discussion.

Of course, you'd want to eliminate any reference to the gender of the person that jumped in the driver's window (shedding the macho male stereotype) as well as eliminate the reference to the MB due to it's German heritage. And, did anyone notice that it was a WHITE Mercedes?

WOW this thread has blown up..

Well guys.. Being a FEMALE enthusiast... I have to deal with the 'female driver' stereotype almost every day... ..it's just a sad fact of life (regardless of the fact that you'll never see me applying makeup, yelling at kids or eating or drinking while driving and you won't see me driving an SUV)

...FWIW: I get just as mad at the majority of 'soccer moms' around my neighborhood

So, any descriptive reference to any type of living being is unacceptable, is that right? Or... any reference to a person's ethnicity is way taboo. Of course, being referred to as what you are must be insulting, or that's the way it seems to me. Why am I never insulted when referred to as white, cracker, or whatever others tend to call we Caucassians. Is that what we are called today? Are there any white people that are sensitive as to what they are referred to? You see, most of us whities, don't really give a damn, why can't others just feel the same? I can't seem to keep up with what people prefer to be called today. One day it's this, the next day it's that.

One question I have today is: Exactly what do we call people like the driver of the MB? It seems nothing is right. Not African American, not black... I mean, what the hell, you guys don't even know what you want to be refereed to as, how are other suppose to know?

And... Pong was just trying to "color" the scene for us. If that's what she was, so freakin what? It's the sign of a good writer to paint a clear picture of the scene and the players.

And... another thought. What if she was referred to as a white chick? Would there have been anyone at all that would have objected to that? And... why not then?

I think this society should move on past all this crap. It's so last century.

Gonzilla, I sure wish you would post the comments that you made at the Tiki, I think they were very well said, and should be shared here.

One last thing. Noel, a description of a person is different than a reference to the obvious, stereotyped lack of ability of a driver based upon their ethnicity. Don't compare the way you phrased your description to the way Pong did. They are nothing alike.

I bet you enjoy blowing the doors off those stereotypes at the track!! A really fast instructor in our region has the bumper sticker, "Grandmas kick ***" on her track car.

Default In answer to Alan's request...

I don't want to kick up the dust any more on this subject, as it has been beaten to death, and to give it any more attention is like adding fuel to the fire. That being said, I had this to say on another board in reply to a question about the intention of the poster who brought up the racial aspect of Pong's post:

"I think he was "coming to the aid of all the African-Americans in the world". I love this self-righteous attitude. It's like "they can't stick up for themselves, so I'd better do it for them!" I'm half Mexican (note: not Latino, not Hispanic. I'm not from Spain and I don't speak Latin). When I was in college I remember getting letters from the school telling me that I was entitled to financial aid (even though I came from a middle-class family) and entrance into the honors society (even though I already had a 4.0), solely based on the fact that my last name was Gonzales. First of all, I was kind of confused that my Welsh background didn't entitle me to the same things. Secondly, I was really upset that I was "entitled" to these things, while Paul Jones who sat next to me in fart history 101, and could have used the financial aid, couldn't get it. It's these "gifts" from "the man" that are really a bigger slap in the face than any racial slur (at least to me). They might as well be saying, "since you're a beaner and you'll never be as good as us, we'll just go ahead and give you money, because we know you don't have it, and help you get into honors classes, because we know you can't do it on your own. God knows that's the only way you will ever be competitive in our world." Call me any name in the book (I'll give you a few: spic, greaser, beaner, wetback, burrito-butt. or for the Welsh side: limey, welsher, drunk), but don't ever assume that my ethinicity is a handicap."

That's about all I have to say on the subject. I've got my flame suit on, but hopefully people will understand where I'm coming from. Can we just move on and talk about Porsches now???

Took the words right out of my mouth, Alan. Except that I'm not Caucasian. Heck, I don't even know where Caucasia is?!! But I HAVE been called "white" on the inside ...whatever the heck that means

PC Speak neads to die, period. And I have been doing my part on a daily basis to hasten it's ugly end. Cheers to you, my friend. Let us all do our part to end the idiocy that popular culture has termed "sensitivity" ...ugh!!!

OT: BTW, to you and Fred, thanks for the invite!! The Tiki was down last night. I'll look for the thread now.

As a member of the most powerful "genderclass" you would not feel the concern. White males are at the top of the cultural-socioeconomic food chain. As such, white males have little to be concerned about (let's save affirmative action for another OT thread). Members of other ethnic/gender groups who have (or whose ancestors) had to fight for more power have an increased sensitivity to this issue. I get that.

Pong's comments had nothing to do with any of this. Just a statement of fact, like one would give to the police officer so that they could track the person down. He was not promoting a stereo-type, he was not doing any racial profiling, just stating the facts.

When we fear the facts, we have big problems.
