My new 96 targa is much louder than the one I had before, but not in the usual way. It seems you can hear every sound from the engine or road coming through that little vent beneath the rear side window. I'm concerned it may be an open path admitting carbon monoxide. Do any of you know what that little vent is supposed to connect to or what it does?
Thanks again,
LeeH

I checked and the engine pad / sound mat is present. I don't see any fit issues. The sound is coming directly from the little vent, not the side windows or top gaps. Does anyone know what that vent does? I used to think it was part of the A/C, but nothing ever comes out of it and it does not seem to be connected to a blower.
Thanks,

I have a targa, I think he means the rear window sill vents. I think they're for de-fogging the side rear
windows or air venting or something.
If that's the case, no. Noise does not come out of those vents... :-))
Check the engine compartment and take off the back padding inside the car and take a look.
You can even pull the side covers off in the badk without much trouble, there are just a few screws.

Took it to the dealer today and they were very interested, especially when I told them I could smell exhaust coming through the vents. They said they were part of the defroster system, too, but didn't know exactly how they worked. They're looking into it for me.
PS - Wheel well liners are intact. David - the vents are unique to the targa, as far as I know.

Hi Lee,
Good luck; it's probably something obvious given the night and day difference once you get a trouble shooter at the garage onto it. Having said that I was hearing a funny noise, RPM related coming through my roof lining and that turned out to be a slightly loose fan belt that had been replaced but was due to be adjusted (having "settled in"). I had a bizarre rattle that seemed to be coming from one of the side panels in the back and that was a broken bumper "rib" (the metal tubes that they use to hode the bumpers in shape) that was now touching the exhaust box intermittently. Sometimes these things drive you mad!
Cheers,
David
