Hey Steve. Just changed the transmission oil on my 95 993 and my Porsche certified mechanic recommended SWEPCO as the best lubricant. Hope this helps.

I seem to remember a thread that said someone had called Swepco, and that there was a certain lifespan to Swepco. But that was on an opened bottle.
The guy said he saved about a quart with each refilling of the transmission, and asked Swepco if it would be ok if he used 4 "saved" quarts, and they didn't recommend it.
FWIW, if that 88 is long gone and the Swepco is long aged, maybe you should buy a new gallon of the stuff.

I have been using Swepco products (the gear lube and the grease) on my 911's for over 10 years, including my 993. The products work great and I have zero complaints so far...

Hi Guys,
The gallon is unopened ands about 2 years old. I doubt if it has "gone bad". I appreciate your input. i think I will install one of these days.

I am checking into Motul...I heard a "pitch" from a Motul sales guy, very convincing evidence that Motul synthetic engine oil is superior to Mobil 1. Whe I get the details I'll post them.
The oil can handle higher temps before breaking down, it is 100% synthetic and the time between changes can be better than Mobil 1.

Maybe I am old school but I thought the oil "got dirty" because of all the unburnt hydrocarbons, leaks from the rings, water, etc. that eventually just pollutes the oil. These materials are not stripped by the filters and remain in suspension. I would not extend the change interval past the recommendations and of course I typically change much more ofter ; either yearly or every 5000 miles. Maybe I am stupid but when I did my engine rebuild my case and main bearings were "clean as a whistle".
Cheers,
Mike

There are a lot of Porsche owners who feel that the SWEPCO is "the right stuff" for the 901/915 transmissions and that Mobil 1 is "the right stuff" for the G50 transmissions. I personally subscribe to that. I use the SWEPCO in my '81 and Mobil 1 in my '98. Since I have no way of scientifically comparing whether one of them is better in both cars, I can only say that the gearbox in my 911SC feels great when I replace with SWEPCO and my 993 feels just fine with Mobil 1 in it.
