Default Help please. Belt exploded.

A few miles from home, I heard a pop in the back and then the "!" light came on along with the Anti-Lock and Battery idiot lights as well.

Can someone please tell me what this belt drives?

Close-up

TIA

I think thats the alt. belt (that light should have come on, on your dash.....or its the fan (ditto))

same thing happened to me once...alternator no longer spinning so idiot lights come on due to low voltage. Scarred me at first with the loud "pop" then dash lights go on....really no big deal just get a new belt on and everything goes back to normal...wheh

Yessir, that is the alt belt. No worries you still had cooling function. Best would be to replace the fan belt as well given the white stripe on it.

Thanks all for the quick reply. I would have guessed alternator because of the battery light, but I had fears of something worse.

Do you know if I can drive 30 miles without the belt?

Thanks again.

With a fully charged battery, the answer is perhaps yes. Of course this means driving without any accessories such as the lights, A/C, radio, etc on.

I wouldn't risk it though. Get a new belt on first.

cheers,
Joe

You probably can drive 30 miles with all the accessories off(ac,radio, etc.) altough its not recommended. All the load is on the battery but it may adversely affect your engine electronics( esp. in modern cars).
I would avoid driving it until the belt(s) is replaced unless my safety depends on it(bad neighborhood, etc.)They are really not that hard to change, why risk it?
Good luck!

I had the same thing happen several years ago with my 95 cab - right as I was approaching home. I drove to the mechanic a week later (only 4-5 miles) and barely made it.

In the righthand lower corner of the second pic, it appears that there may still be belt fragments down in there. I'd try to get those out so they don't get sucked into the fan...

Same thing here. What concerned me was the ABS warning light came on too. Contacted my local P-car mechanic (friend) and he told me that was normal. Replaced both belts and everything was right with the world again.

Looks like the fan belt is on the way out too .... it appears to be twisted at the low tension alarm wheel: a piece of the alt. belt likely took a ride between it and its pulley - causing a mistracking.

Given that second picture, I would not drive the car until all belts and pieces of belt are removed and new belts installed.

Well something I confirm hat's said before: something is wrong on the second picture! I've been in my garage to see my belts, and definitely, the surviving alternator belt is not in good shape. It looks twisted. The plastic wheel from the "belt broken" alarm system should roll flat on the belt. Take care before driving further without a serious check!

Thanks as well for the further replies. Based upon what gordo993 said, I cleaned-up as much as I could and gingerly drove the 10 miles to the local dealer. Made it, thank God. And yeah, that other belt looks very strange. I told myself, any strange sounds, and I was going to shut her down.

I am going to have the brakes looked at as well because I have a very LOUD squeal.

I think I am going to have to write a post about everything that has gone wrong since I purchased. Might shed some light and warnings for future owners.

Thanks again. This board is the best.
