You could ask the bodyshop to turn it into a Speedster now that the roof is so low!
All the best with the repairs.

Just read the post. It is a very unfortunate incident and you seem to be taking it very well. This lift accident hits home with me because my ceiling is lower than my max lift height too. Fortunately the breaker box is right next to the lift controls. I'm very curious as to what the root cause is as I would never have thought this possible. I'm sure the guys on garagejournal.com would be interested in this and some might even put in safeguards after seeing your pics. I won't post anything there unless its ok with you.

Never told us who or what was at fault-

If it was your home wiring system that failed, did your homeowners insurance pay?

Why would the lift maker pay???

More info needed...

Probably a vacuum tube issue in the shut-off circuit....I think they used those when this thread was originally written...

As I walked back to the basement garage, I could hear the lift motor running!!!! As I ran in to that garage, I could hear the car roof and windshield being crushed!!!!!!!!!. I was able to unplug the lift, but the damage is done . I am so bummed. It appears that the lift malfunctioned (Mohawk A7 lift).

Does anyone know of a Top Notch body shop in the Nothern VA OR MD area that could be recommended? Also a product liability Lawyer....

I took pictures but it may take me a while to get them to a posting format. The sight turns my stomach...
Did you have the lift switched to the "up" position when you went to flip the breaker? Is the switch a spring loaded "active" button or a passive switch?

Yes, it has been some years since the incident... The lift motor has a momentary push button switch. There was no way to know that any arcing had welded the contacts shut. I have since installed a lever disconnect switch that I now always put into the off position when I am not raising or lowering the lift. By the way, the lift installer (independent tech) said he has seen burnt switches, bent safety stop bars, etc... No matter what, there is always a chance of malfunction.

On a happy note, my car is now better than ever with the many mods and cuper paint work that was done.

You could take apart the old switch and see. I certainly wouldn't have reused it.

ps I'm glad everything worked out and you've moved on. I didn't even realize this was an old thread. Some days I'm clueless.
