what is that knot from 2nd to 3rd
Does everyone experience that knot from shifting from 2nd to 3rd? my mech says they all do that. Is he right and if so has anyone been able to fix this? Is it even a problem?red

The knot you are describing sounds like you are describing the feeling of the synchros. If the synchros are working properly you shouldn't feel that knot. Do you feel this during cold or even after warm up?

I have the same thing, to a minor degree. "Knot" is a good description. When my transmission is not fully warmed up, there is a little notchiness going into third, like I can feel the dog teeth engaging. When it is warmed up, no problem, especially if I wind it to 4,000 RPM or higher before shifting. The magic gear lube Robin recommends helped.

As others have mentioned, I feel it from 1st to 2nd when it's cold out. It goes away when it's warmed up and I don't really notice it in any other gear.
I just changed my gear oil today to Swepco. Part of my 60K DIY. I'm curious to see if I feel any differences.

mine does it. techs and others have said the same: "they all do that". to avoid it, i slow down my shifting. change at 'higher' rpm (4000). 'lean' shifter against the 'gate' of the gear your shifting to and wait a sec until you 'feel' the sycro mesh-up, then in. 99% success. no slamming into gears. i was once reminded: "it's not a mustang, dude."
i also use redline gear oil. i've read that it is good.
good luck.

You didn't mention how fast you are shifting....
I think all the 993 trans will have a knot if you shift too fast. These have a pace that they should be shifted at and if you are feeling resistance...it is just that, resitance, and you are working the syncros and will cause them to wear faster.
It all depends on how fast you shift. Try slowing down as Traffic53 describes.
There was a long thread a while back about somebody "speedshifting" and breaking his gearbox.
For my car, I come out of the gear fast and pause just a split second before going into the next higher gear...it is not linear at all. I also, when cold, double clutch the upshifts from 1 to 2 and 3 to 4 as this helps with the timing. I read somewhere...Bentley or one of the books that the transmissions have a pace and you cannot shift faster than the transmissions pace.
Good Luck!

wow what a great description..this is EXACTLY what my car does in shifting from 1-2 and from 2-3... its like a knot/notichiness sensation, like i am waiting for something to match up or align so that it can go into gear then i can release the clutch pedal
