Corvette Z06 or Porsche

The original post said "bang for buck." That said, I don't think there's anything that comes near the C6-Z06 for performance-for-dollar quotient. While the C5 has never been my cup of tea, that Z06 was still a respectable car, save the rattles and interior cheesiness. But the C6 has ratcheded up the performance and quality bar even higher, and no one who seriously respects performance ought to poo poo it's credentials. It isn't a Porsche, but then nothing else is. No denying 911s have character. But equally evident is that the new Z06 and regular C6 both represent a serious performance force to be reckoned with.

That's BS. American workers are exteremely hard working and with the crap being made in China and Germany, I think Americans have moved to the fore front of quality. Despite my hatred for Corvettes, the Z06 destroys the 993 in performance, maintance, and seat of the pants performace. Hell, I could blow by 911's in an 03 Cobra (with a modified suspension) at Leguna Seca. USA builds a better car, but Germans build a car I would rather drive.

From a guy who's daily driver is a '96 Ford Explorer, I have no complaints about Ford. My hat is off at 130k. My "daily" vehicle has been pretty dependable, to say the least, over the past 8 years. From a depreation standpoint and overall value from a person who has never purchased a new car in my life, the Porsche by far has been treating me well. However, my 77 Bronco seems to be creaping up the ladder. On the other hand, anyone see the 1969 Baldwin-Motion Camaro SS SuperCar on the cover of Summit Racing this month? SWEET!! Regardless, if it starts, its meant to drive.

The latest issue of Car and Driver pits the Z06 against the 911(newer variant).
Also compares 911 vs. Cayman, and discusses the 911's probability of remaining "King of the Road".

USA builds a better car
One simple thing for me is to get into the driver's seat, close your eyes, grab a hold of that door and listen to the sound as you close it. To me, THAT is THE telltale sign as to what you are sitting in. There is nothing like it.

No contention regarding the solid build quality of 993s and earlier. In terms of door closure, feel over rough roads, or overall chassis integrity, my 82Sc feels just as solid as my 993, which is to say rock-solid! But I believe the initial question was one of performance. No doubt as to which car I'd rather have since I chose to own two of them. But to simply decry the C6 as a POS because it's American, it's a Chevy, or it isn't a Porsche is shortsighted, to say the least ...IMHO of course.

I don't think you are doing your friend a favor by trying to persuade him to buy one over the other. You may have opinions on what is right for you, but you may not have the best opinion for him.
They are really two different cars and have two different sets of qualities. As to which is better for your friend, only your friend can decide in the end.
I don't know what his budget is, but if he could afford a new 997, he should test drive one. If not, let him drive your car to round out his experience. However, it's his money and let him have the joy of choosing the ride he wants.
Regardless of his choice, he is a kindred spirit in the world of motorcars.

Everyone else will say it hasn't enough low end power, it rides rough, it handles goofy, it doesn't have cupholders, I can't see the a/c controls through the steering wheel, I can't reach the radio, the mirrors are offset, it takes too much oil, the wipers are too short, it makes too much wind noise, the tires wear too fast, the speedometer is in the wrong place, the engine is in the wrong place, and that they just don't "GET IT."
sure corvettes are nices, but i (personally) dont like them.

Different Strokes
My brother has a 2003 Z06 and while it is not the newer version, it is pretty impressive in terms of raw power. When we get together we drive each other's car, try to out drive each other and poke fun at each other. Typical session lasts about 2 hours as we swap back and forth.
They are different, no doubt. Handling on the Z06 is not bad and lots of (reasonable priced) options to mod and upgrade, which to me is a lot of fun. But at then end of the day it feels too big and kind of clumsy. The 993 feels nimble and tight.
All of us are car nuts or we wouldn't be discussing this, but each car we choose has compromises. Like the friends we choose, cars have good and bad traits and each of us decides what matters the most. There are really crappy cars out there but the Z06 (especially the new model) is not one of them, it is just different.

Three stories:
As a teenager in the early 70's, I worked at a large dealership and drove nearly everything- Jag, Vette, Camaro RS, Pantera, Mercedes, etc. Eventually drove a 2.4L 911 about three blocks. Been a Porsche guy since that moment.
When we first started dating, my girlfriend (definately NOT a car person) couldn't understand what would possess someone to pay so much for a car. Then she drove a 78 SC and she understood.
My boss's boss and I were talking cars one day and he, not even knowing what I have in the garage, said, "You don't seem like a Corvette guy. You seem more like a Porsche guy."
The moral of these stories is, as others have pointed out, your friend will likely instinctively know what vehicle is right for him.

Thats just a joke but "bang for the buck" he's convinced Vette is the way to go. His previous sports car was 95 RX7, which was a very nice when he got it in 1995.

Costing a lot less than a 997, the z06 is hard to resist. My only 3 concerns about the Z06 are:
1) pretty cheap interior. Start pushing on the plastic and you'll find typical GM cheap design. Not as bad as some GM stuff, but still disappointing.
2) Somewhat skiddish handling. C&D tested the Z06 and viper at a track i am extremely familiar with (Grattan) and they were scared (seriously!) of the skiddish handling in the z06 on the rough course. I think we'll see LOTS of balled-up z06's on the streets.
3) long-term quality. Hard to compete with Boxster/Cayman/911.
