I really think the MY02 5-spoke wheels are my favorite look for the 993. I am interested in these wheels for purely cosmetic reasons. I track my car 1 or 2 times per year, and I will use my original 17" cup wheels on the track. Therefore, I am not too concerned about absolute weight and performance for a set of "street" wheels. With that in mind I found the following on eBay for only $800. They look great in the photos, but why would they use bad photos to advertise?
Has anyone purchased these and have real experience with them. Even if not, what do you guys think of them?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=8010485554
The ad lists the fronts at 24.5 pounds and the rears at 27 pounds, what are the weights of the OEM wheels?
Thank you for any and all opinions.

Those are really heavy. From the images on their site, looks as though the spoke detail, where it meets the rim of the wheel, is not sharp enough. It doesnt look right. Not sure of their offsets either.
The factory wheels weigh ~19lbs front and ~22 or ~23lbs. rear. Big difference.
Keep and eye on eBay and P-car classifieds, they show-up from time to time at reasonable pricing. My .02 anyway.

I agree with Chris... Wait for a real set of Porsche MY'02s. There come up all the time on eBay. You might check with Wheel Enhancements as they usually have some take offs....

Daniel,
From the Ebay ad:
I'd keep looking until you found real Porsche MY02 wheels.
Andreas
From the Ebay ad:
These are aftermarket replicas made to exact factory specification.

I agree--the real wheels aren't that bad--there is an ebay guy [porschewheelguy] that I bought mine from for my 993 and he took my 17" cups in trade for them. Was a pleasure to deal with. I bet if you send him an e-mail he can tell you how much you're looking at if you want a set or want to trade.
Good luck!
Good luck!

I love the 5 Spoke look too on the 993 and am Considering this avenue also
Here is the answer I got from Wheels & Caps
Where the original wheels were forged, ours are cast. Which makes them slightly heavier. All other specifications, hubbore/offsets/paint color/etc, are exactly the same. We have not received any pictures from previous customers as of yet.

OEMs are cast, too.
Sorry, I vote go with OEM... did you know they are made by BBS? Who makes the knockoffs and do you want to trust some unknown for something as important as wheels? Notice he didn't include quality in his list of things being the same.

Daniel,
Lots goes into the manufacture of a wheel. And guess what, your entire car and life (and that of loved ones in the car) is "riding" on them. Don't cheap out. This is not a place to be penny-wise and pound foolish. The OE rims are the "minimum" wheel I would use on any car, let alone a special car like our 993s. Not to hyperbolize, but I consider wheels/tires as safety items. Now that's not to say that an inexpensive wheel will grenade on you, but if you sustained a wheel failure at speed, what is the likelihood of injury ...would you skimp on safety belts to shave off a few dollars? All IMHO, of course. Good luck on the hunt (for the real deal
).

As far as I know, Porsche hasn't used forged wheels since Fuchs. The newer style (Cup1's and beyond) are cast.

The OEM wheels are lighter if that's important to you.
As for brandname and no-name, many wheels are made in China/Asia these days, even if they're branded. The difference besides the construction (ie replicas tend to be heavier) is the quality control and after sales service. If you think about it, even a brand-name wheel was at some point a no-name wheel. I'm sure the no-name guys aspire to one day have the same cache as BBS. The trick is to get the no-name at the no-name price but with brand-name quality (witness Hyundai cars today that rival Hondas). Unfortunately, it's anyone's guess where that point is.

Here is what one of the Ebay sellers Wheel Dynamics had to say about the wheels:
Hello, the wheels are made in italy by a company called MIM. They make
wheels for just about every manufacturer.
I understand that they have a TUV rating - is that a tough rating to get?
