Default Painting Rotor Hats

Advice please.....I have just bought new OEM rotors from Sunset and they have told me that they are painted with "stuff" to stop rust but somebody else has questioned this coating as a long term prevention of rusty hats.....question....is anybody aware of anything I can buy locally at an auto store that will last and prevent rust.....Rick Lee has suggested something but I cannot get it in time to do rotor/ pad change this w/e and I dont wnat to put off any longer....thanks in advance

David,

Don't know if these help =- but they are more about restoring old hats:
There is a pretty detailed thread on the 964 sub-forum:

While you're at it, just do the complete big red paint upgrade:

I understood that the oem rotors are fine the way they are, and the Zimmerman oem 'type' need painting. I've had both, and always have painted the 'type' rotors with high temp grey spray paint, masking carefully and giving several thin coats.

Default rotor refinish

for my 2 cents worth, i dont like the look of the OEM flat gray finish on the 993 rotors. i think it looks unfinished and the flat finish in light gray shows and attracts brake dust to easy plus it is hard to clean the flat finish.

on 3 993's i have removed the rotors and sandblasted the rotors, then clearcoated them w/hi heat paint. they look great and clean easy when/if ever needed. they dont show rust either, other than on the brake surface if you wash car and dont drive it after. but that would happen no matter what color you painted the rotors

i think the clearcoat look gives the most natural functional look to the hub area.

now to add another nice detail to the widebody cars (that have bolted front rotor hats) you can remove the rotor from the hat and polish the retainers. then clear coat the whole assembly.that gives a nice trick look to the front.

I got black "brake calliper" paint at Autozone this weekend and i am going to clean and paint the hats before I mount them.

Dr. Ken - where did you get hi-heat clear? I have looked localy and on the net, and cannot find any.

All of you....thanks for the input.....I will go and see if I can find black high temp paint as I like the idea of now being able to "see" the hat......the only thing that made me wince was the big red upgrade.....that was UGLY.....

Again thanks for all the useful input

i think black shows up more than clear since black is such a strong contrast against the wheel and scrubbed rotor surface.w/clear there is more of a natural transition from the wheel to the rotor braking surface. but almost anything looks better that tne OEM gray primer after it gets dirty

How about Cad plating? I rather like the grey paint on my OEM rotors.

I used an OEM looking high-heat gray primer, and then added a few coats of high-heat clear coat.
Looks factory, but the clear coat holds off the crud better than the flat, uncoated gray.
And I agree that there is a massive difference (rustwise) between OEM brake rotors (good) and Zimmerman (bad).

Dr Ken's solution is probably the nicest looking, but I use barbeque paint on the Zimmermans on my 951 - holds up well and is easy to find. It's a good functional finish, I'll use it on the OEMs for my 993 when I do them this winter.

I've been through I think 3 sets of OE rotors during the past 11 years all of which have been driven in snow and salt here in New England and they all held up fine without rusting.
