Ther was a thread here recently where a lister won a concours class with his 993. On the rotor hats he used "chrome"/aluminum paint so th eye didn't see a break from the wheel to the rotor.

I am not so sure that that paint will hold up in real world use...David asked for something long term.

I might give it a try as they will look better than they are! Sand blasting and coating sounds good but I don't have access to a blaster right now.

Cheers

the 993 Eric picked up from Marina Del Ray had YELLOW painted hats (stock black 993 brakes).... not sure what type of paint used (probably the caliper paint available) cause it was strong and held up well... but got thrown away with the big red upgrade...

Hi --

I went with a high-temp non-rusting type of paint, trying to match wheel color.

Cleaned rotor 'hat' and masked off caliper, covered with plastic remaining parts that I didn't want silver, and started painting. Many light coats. Still looks new after 1 year, 6k miles, untold washings (including some winter driving when roads are nice).

Good luck -- Jeff

Forgot to show the post-painting pic (with some residual silver paint on the rotor).

When I used to show my 500E I had a new set of rotors electroless nickel plated. The cost should range from $100 to $150 for a set of four. The plating obviously wore off of the braking surface but the balance remained shiny and beautiful silver. I can't vouch for the long term results but I know a few other 500E owners also gave it a try with good results throughout the life of the rotors. Might be worth investigating.

In the other pics of the rotor hat painting, the wheel wells and surrounding area look as bad or worse than the offensive hat! But with those cars being dark color I suppose it doesn't show up as much.

With a white car such as mine, I find that keeping the fenderwells clean really accents things like silver rotor hats, polished brake bleeders, cleaned-up dust-shields, etc.

fun fun fun...

Kind of a micro version of the slippery slope: wheel-well detaling...

I think I'd go for anodized long before I'd go for nickel plating... but that is just me I guess...

No doubt any painting or plating is for cosmetic purposes only for the most part.

Anyways the nickel plating was recommended over anodizing by every plating company I spoke to when I was searching for an answer......just what I've come across. Powder coating would also work but again, it costs and is it really necessary.

BTW the nickel held up well even on regular canyon runs trhough Mt Palomar and Ortega Hwy for those who are familiar with SoCal. No signs of discoloration or peeling/chipping.
