Never sell your car and you will never care what the marketing research companies come up with as to who and what the buyer is interested in. These cars are beautiful and we all know it.
Sell your car and you will once again enter the land of the dreamers wishing and wanting a 993 or 911 or 356 or 550 etc.
Porsche is one hell of a company in my world...they have kept a smile on my face in the 20 years I have been driving these exquisite machines.
Anyways, those marketing research people...what do they drive?

I did enroll, as a PCA member, in the 50th anniversary 997 draw...if I'm lucky and get the prize...I'll sell the baby...get a Riviera blue 993TT and hold the change in my pocket...I could not care less about getting a brand new Porsche...
This being said...I think Texas911 did not mean what he sounded like...we did exchange some e-mails while I was selling my 356 and the guy is pretty fond of Porsche's heritage...
pcar964 did not say every new Porsche buyer is a "poser"...he just expose the obvious...the vast majority of people entering a dealer nowadays is looking for a PORSSSH instead of a POR-SHA!!! Is that a problem? Not at all...we are just talking about it...

wow... you're obviously very impressed with yourself, you can't imagine someone not wanting to be like you. As hard as it may be for you to accept, not everyone is lusting after a new porsche. If you want to believe that anyone critical of the new cars is simply "jealous," fine - whatever makes you sleep better at night.

pcar964 - great post and info. IMHO is right on the money.
Texas911 - I guess the difference is that when the 911/964/993 came out, there were very few cars that could really technically stand next to it for less money. The 997 is a great ride, but there are many cars that meet or exceed it's performance for a lot less money.
This is why Porsche has to sell the name as the enthusiants know their sh*t. How many 997'ers out there think they have dry sump (the way Porsche explains it) when it's really a crock.
Because you are on Rennlist, (as most everyone else on it) says you are an enthusiast (the 993 you have is a giveaway duh!), but you seem to be defending your 997 purchase -Which to me, subject to any future issues, is a great car, but not as great as it could have been, if Porsche were catering even a tiny bit to the enthusiasts That said any P-car driver would love to have a 997, but us enthusiasts raise the bar higher in our opinions/critisisms. Average guy who buys now does not have a clue of history ..etc. Maybe "Excellence is no longer expected".

Terry Adams I am impressed at the amount of miles you put on your car .. I would be interested in what you would think if you took a 997s out for your next trip .. thought about test driving one . When I see 993 folks expresing doubt about the 997 I do not think it means anything unless you have driven both ... Has anyone here driven both ?

I *have* a 997S and don't like the following features:
fake quads, 19s, pointy tail lights, and navigation screen.
Pi**ses me off that these parts were added to compete with..., what? Corvettes?
But I DO have 355 hp, another new Porsche and the most advanced 911.
So what's the point of this thread? So most 993 owners are better than 997 owners with many exceptions?

Do you have to be a weekend tracker to be an enthusiast? I think not although I think more senior Porsche owners do track. I define enthusiast as those that are into their cars, take excellent care of their cars and view driving as a sport and pleasure, rather than transportation.
Porsche is becoming more mainstream w more product offerings. However, it'll always offer cars for even the most hardcore enthusiast. As long as this continues, I think it's good to make SUV or sedan to boost profit and thus stay independent. I'd hate to see Porsche bought by another manufacturer like Chrysler or Toyota because it's lack of $.

I sold my 98 993 C4 cab for a 996 ....... That was a really bad move . Now that I have sold my 996 I will not go back to the 993 the 997 is a superior car in many ways in my opinion . I will say that all the time I had a 996 I should have kept the 993 ..... from 98-05 but now the 997 has really turned into the new benchmark for Porsche .

Well, it is great to learn that Porsche is now selling 997's for ~$75 - 85K that compare favorably to our 8 - 10 yr old 993's. All those Cayenne profits are really a boon to sportscar enthusiasts!

I believe this thread has somehow gone into a different direction. The initial thread stated that most of the new Porsche owners were not in the enthusiast category, not which car & model was better.
In my own personal experience, I have to agree that the recent profiles of Porsche owners (i.e. post 993) are not enthusiasts, generally speaking. By enthusiast, I'm not just referring to track time, but rather the real appreciation of what Porsche is and has stood for during the past 57 years. A lot of the 996 people I've talked to have no idea of this Porsche heritage.
In saying that, however, I know several 996 & 997 owners who can be classified as Porsche purists. Quite honestly, if I could afford to get into a GT3 then I probably would.

Regarding cost, I don't think the new 997 is that out of line. The original price of my '96 Cab was $80k. Ten years later a 997S is only 10k more, base price. Not a cheap car by any means but probably no worse than a 993 back then.
