Default If you want cheap R-compounds, get 'em while you can!!!

I happened to be tinkering around the TireRack website and noticed the Dunlop SSR (R compounds) are on final clearence (meaning when they are gone, they are gone!!)

...the 225 40 18s are only $115 each

...and the 265 35 18s are only $120 each

I have a sinking feeling that we'll never see R compounds this cheap again.. so just in case any of you wanted 'em ... now appears to be the time..

I might have to grab a set even tho I'm still months away from needing tires, at that price - wow! Are they OK for regular street driving (mostly freeway)?

I drive to-from the track on them all the time (up to 200 miles one way) and never had any street problems...

They are considered a rain tire in full tread..

I'm sure you can use them just fine in the street BUT keep in mind they will wear out faster than a normal street tire because of the soft R compound. I have no idea how long they will last you if you only do street driving. My 1st set probably had no more than 1000 street miles and another 1000 track miles (or 8 track DE days) I'm on my 2nd set for this season right now actually.

...and for the price, I do enjoy them.. they aren't as good as the MPCSs but surprisingly darn close and more predictable...

Consider buying 2 sets of rears to each one set of fronts. That way, if you can't locate these tires in the future, you'll get full use and value out of your purchase.

Just out of curiosity, how much do those tires normally cost?

I was told that next year the new ones will go for just a little cheaper than a MPSC...

They were selling for $129 each for a while (but not considered closeout)...

Someone mentioned it was an 'introductory' thing (get you to love them so much you want more but then you have to pay 'normal' pricing next season)

..My tireRack guy said TireRack got a really good price on a lot of them and was passing it on to customers... I dunno which is correct..

Anyway, here is the direct link:

is this really true? will the rears only last half the life of the fronts?

That is pretty standard for any tire on a 993, me thinks.

I go through 3 sets of rear tires for each set of fronts.

corded my rears before the fronts twice on R compounds (once on a set of DSSRs just recently and before years ago on a set of BFG R1s) ..otherwise all my tires wear out at about the same time in track use because of corner wear on the fronts..

i have heard similar for street tires. but i'm really curious about track use. ceboyd says her track use tires wear 'about' the same front to back. i think she should be about right, but i'm new to this. what do you guys think?
