Default Whats the best way to "launch" your 993 off the line?

So what do we think are the best ways to get our cars off the line, for maximum acceleration? (and/or minimum mechanical abuse?)
I tend to find a lot of "axle tramp" ( even with new shocks), when I use the old dial up lots of revs and side slip the clutch routine. Makes you cringe!
Wide tyres, and lots of weight over the back tends to make life interesting...
What do you guys do?

Cheers Lyndon

Can I throw in what to do if you have four wheel drive as I assume Lyndon's question is aimed at two wheel drive?

Cheers,

David

Talking Your mechanic encourages you to ....

launch your P-Car off the line. The best way that I know of is to rev her up to about 4000 RPM and drop the clutch. You'll get a few launches before, and alas, the transmission pukes itself out all over the street. But no worries, for about $6,000 you can have it rebuilt

If you are lucky and don't blow the tranny, perhaps you'll only get hit for a clutch...at least $2,000 before all is said and done

Just in case you don't know, launching a 993 car, or any Porsche for that matter is not a good idea ....if you want a drag race...see if you can get one rolling from 2nd gear. I am sorry to report the bad news to you.

If I were really interested in drag racing, I'd have a Mustang for this purpose. Set it up with nitrous, street racing slicks from Hoosier, a 4:56 rear end and hammer down, all over town...unfortunately in SoCal, if you get caught in an organized street race, they'll sieze your car. They may also put it into a crusher. Now that's ugly. Of course they will let you have the 2 foot block the car has been reduced to, and it goes without saying, the payments will continue. These blocks make great bases for coffee tables, once the oil has had a chance to leak out.

There must be some vaguely sympathetic ways of getting off the line, or away from the lights, or somewhere near the factory 0-60 times, that doesnt involve : 3 new gearboxes, 6 clutches, 2 broken drive shafts, or an embarrasing 2nd gear takeoff....( and still be beaten by an asthmatic 1.2 automatic Hyundai)?

Hi Lyndon,

If that "asthmatic 1.2 automatic Hyundai" is beating you from the lights it sounds like you may have already used one of your six cluches..... ;-)

Maybe "launch" was the wrong word and perhaps "pull away quickly"? is more appropriate. I know I certainly don't want to knacker my clutch and with four wheel drive I'm a bit sensitive.

Cheers,

David

... those Hyundai's are quick little buggers, especially the big block 1.2's ...
Maybe I should throw the clutches at them?
Cheers Lyndon

Strap some JATO units to the engine lids.

Frankly, if you want to drag race, buy a Mustang.

a) back Porsche into a garage
b) remove key from ignition
c) close garage door
d) get into Camaro
e) start Camaro
f) rev to 5k
g) dump clutch

I think the terms "maximum acceleration" and "minimum abuse" are mutually exclusive. These cars are not designed for stop light-to-stop light Woodward Avenue runs. The wide sticky tires and rearward bias means that the rear will have a ton of grip and require an inordinate amount of clutch slippage to do a smoky burnout. Looks cool in the movies and the magazine covers, but the owner will be stuck with the consequences.

The best compromise is to let the clutch out as you would normally do and then just floor it. Anything higher than 2800 rpms or so is just wearing away your clutch.

I'm with Mark (and some comments from the others), there is a fine line and a sensative touch to getting away quickly without "smoking" the clutch. I tend to blip the throttle and just as it gets back to about 2 grand I start letting the clutch out at the same time begin getting back on the trottle (at this point the clutch has begun to "lug" the motor). If you do correctly, it feels very smooth and easy on the car and has a nice launch feel to it, without overloading any one component. The trick is to just "set" the clutch disk almost like "popping" the clutch but the revs aren't high enough to explode anything. Its the coolest feeling when I get it right! when you get it wrong, you'll either almost kill the motor or slip the clutch.......neither looks or sounds cool!

In my case:

d) get into E55
e) turn on A/C
f) turn on seat messager
g) look at the 'vette next to you at the intersection
h) when light is green, wait for the vette to get started
i) floor it and wave goodbye to the vette
j) tell the kids in the back seat to wave.

i was mostly watching the christmes tree, but I'd say I revved it to 3500 and at green nailed the gas while easing the clutch (not popping it). Had a little wheelspin then whoosh. Ran a 12.80 sec 111 mph on a humid, 95 degree plus day.
