Whats the best way to "launch" your 993 off the line?

When I was 17 I enjoyed quick launches in my '72 Plymouth Satellite. Much later I had a Kawasaki GPz1100 with which I also enjoyed mind-numbing quick launches. I got that out of my system and now that I'm grown up I've got a 993 Carrera.

Don't kill any critical parts from a standstill off the line. You don't have to be first off the line to "win". Just get it moving "nicely" for those first 20 feet so that you're fully engaged, to get it moving, and then.... stomp on it, and proceed through the gears..... then check rearview mirror.

Agreed, launch is not the ticket. I try to get off good and then run it up to about 6 grand in each gear. But now-a-days every kid with a cheap Jap import and what? $400 - $500 and a Saturday afternoon can bolt on a bottle. And believe me, even an anemic little 1.2 can give you a run. I once came across a kid in Saturn on the bottle - nothing else- that was a real pest. On the third try of course I ate him alive - NOS is only temporary! But it's still a little annoying not to be able to smoke em flat, right out of the gate.

I'm sure it's simple matter of bragging rights among their buds. If you want to have the top "story" you need a big conquest to boast about. What really tickles me is that if they can give you a good run or even beat you that I think they somehow fantasize about how you're going to place and ad in the paper the next day selling your 911 and buying one of what they have! One kid in a Mustang pulled up to me and asked me what year my car was and then said "I can beat that car." To which I replied "even if you could I think I'll keep my 911 anyway". When I lived in South Florida there were an endless supply of hot rodded everything and I was always being challenged.

I can get off the line pretty great around 2500-3000 RPM and let out the clutch fairly quickly, not riding it. Very smooth and as soon as it's out just stomp on it.
However it's even cooler when someone wants to drag you is to look like you are going to, then let them take off while you wait a moment then just slowly pull out....makes them look like an idiot.

This weekend I gave my daughter yet another clutch lesson - she has been driving an automatic Accord for 7 years. On my advice to give it plenty of revs, I watched the needle approach redline, realized I had forgotten to ask her to change out of her flip-flop sandals, and she managed to stall it anyway. She did much better with tennis shoes, but still, it takes a lot of practice to get it right in a Porsche.

I'd never abuse my tranny in order to entertain some "atomic ricer" owner, even if he has neon lights on the undercarriage! ;- )
Actually I get a kick from these babies keeping the RPM around 4k in 2nd and 3rd gears and feeling how amazingly agile they are and how fast you can gain more speed with no hesitation...this is a lesson I learned from 356 ownership...Porsches show their best in movement , not from a stand still point...
Take care...
