Gear Oil change time
Hey guys, what gear oil is recommended for my 1997 C2S (with LSD option 220 in case that makes a difference)? I have to swap out the small seal where the shifter rod enters the transmission so I figured that I'd swap out the oil that's in there. The car has 49,000 KM on it now and I have access to most brands. I do have a friend who is the distributor for Motul in Canada so if anyone here has any experience with their products, let me know what you think otherwise what seems to be the popular and reliable choice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance (again).

Hi Alon,
When I changed my clutch and went for a LWF, according to what I then found on Rennlist, I filled the gear box with Mobil1. It seems that oil is best to have minimum noise with the LWF.
No experience with Motul sorry.
Cheers

Thanks guys. I have read the p-car.com DIY for this and the author stated that he was not entirely happy with the Mobil One. As much as I wan to support my Motul friend, I would like to hear from anyone who has used it. WOrst case scenario, I'll pick up some Mobile One.
What about the Redline or Amsoil? Any thoughts?

Mobil 1 75W90; no problems at 89K miles on my '95 C2. On the '98 Audi A4 Quattro was another matter; was noisy/grinding gears on the same stuff. Had to switch to Redline synthetic.

Mobil One did not help my slight grind into second gear (probably a syncro). I had Redline Shockproof put in and it is like a new transmission. It is too heavy for your climate, but they make a lighter version.
10/09 Edit: This post was from a long, long time ago. It was 2 993's ago for me: a 993 Targa that is long gone.

Guys,
I am going to take care of this, this weekend. Is the transmission fluid and rear-end fluid one in the same in our cars? I saw in P-car.com how to change it, does this change both the fluids? How many quarts of fluid does it take to replace it?

I've used both Redline and Mobil 1. Of the 2, I prefer the Mobil 1. It seems a bit heavier shifting feel wise, but is quieter and smoother than the Redline.
That said, any of these 2 are worlds better than the 45k mile oil that was in my gearbox when I bought my car. (I'm assuming it had never been changed) Doing that gearbox oil change that first time made my transmission feel like new.

I initially used Swepco as it was a good gear oil from my experience in my 82SC. My findings after replacing the Swepco with the Mobil 1 was more complient shifting and better cold wx performance. I can't see a reason to deviate from the Mobil 1.
Just my $.02.
