we currently have a volvo v70r that we haul the kids around in. it needs to go because it sucks. well- it doesn't suck when it's working properly, but that isin't often enough.
a6- only available here in the states with the 3.2 6. the 4.2 8 is available in europe. i'd prefer the 8, for obvious reasons- all related to safety of course
if the 8 cylinder was available here there would be no discussion
bmw has the 530xi which can barely get out of the way of itself. both the audi and bmw don't have third row options.
the e-class benz is the dog's *****. the v8 would be nice- the 55amg wagon even nicer. but those are pretty expensive (start at 65K).
am i missing any possible cars?
what do you all drive?

I agree. The Saab 9-5. We have a "Linear" (cheaper than Aero but plenty of power). However, there is no third (rear-facing) seat option, as with the Volvo wagon. You could fit in two car seats max, with room for a third child, in the back. Many on this list have liked the Mercedes station wagons.

we have a 323i wagon, but it is smaller than a V70. we really like the car, but there's just us and the dog, so room isn't an issue. the M-B wagons are great. (my wife's mom has a 2000 E320 4matic, and i think they're going to get a new MB wagon soon) i did test drive that volvo R wagon. neat interior, decent power, but the blow-off valve would drive me crazy. Jaguar has the X-type wagon, but its about the size of our BMW. the SAAB wagon is probably worth looking at. Subaru's new Legacy looks pretty good, but probably too small, same with the Lexus IS300.
in the domestic market, i think the Ford Freestyle is good looking tall wagon. then there's the Hemi Magnum (again probably too small in the cargo area)

My wife loves her Chrysler Pacifica. The good: stable, very comfortable ride, 3rd row seating, 2nd row of seating is identical to driver/passenger and very comfortable, available in AWD, excellent crash test ratings, 3rd and 2nd row seating can be folded down for a TON of cargo space. The bad: It's only available in a V6 and seems underpowered to me, the 3rd row of seats are difficult to get in and out of as you have to fold the 2nd row seats down and forward.

My wife preferred the Passat 4Motion to the newer Volvo AWD that we now have. Both are fast enough for wagons. The Passat is actually a little larger than the Volvo as far as cargo space goes. I prefer the non-"R" Volvo. Very comfortable on the highway, lots of room, solid as a rock, no service problems. You might also look for an Audi AllRoad (sp?) with low mileage and a warranty from a dealer. The are very nice, and relatively inexpensive in that form.

I considered the E-wagon, the allroad V8, Navigator, and went with the LR3 6 months and 11K miles later, no problem whatsoever, the last row fits two adults comfortably. getting 20mpg on all highway crusing at around 70 mph
I traded in my 2.7 twin turbo A6.
All of my AWDs:

S6. Allroads are really nice but would be worried about the turbos long term. Audis have the best interiors bar none and the S6 is fast. Add H-sport sway bars, without wife knowing of course, and you will have a fast, somewhat nimble family hauling machine.
