I've just got a set of used mufflers from another rennlister, and have a 2 foot section of 2" stainless tubing sitting next to them (bigger dia = louder, right? )
I plan on adding this as soon as I get back from an upcoming trip.
Don't worry Caveman... I'll be posting results to this thread then.
I think Cowtown was going to do this mod too... did that happen?
IIRC, Bruce in Seattle is also working on a set w/ the bypass, but he is trying to attach a flap to the muffler so he can run it w/ or w/o the bypass for sound level concerns. (his wife )
Are any of the guys that were posting a while back on this subject going to update us with their work to date? There is a muffler shop near me that offers to build mufflers to fit any car at a fixed price. I am tempted to see what they can do...
Cheers,
David
I also did this bypass trick and have been driving with it for about 2 weeks to work and back. Leland accurately describes it. It's an awesome sound without being loud and obnoxious. You will drive with the windows down and take your foot off the gas just to hear them burble.
I did TIG on stainless 1.5" pipe. My mufflers also have no stainless packing at all in them.
Clive, please let us know the difference between the 1.5" and 2" tubing. I still have that set of Gilettes (sp?) and although I don't want to tear them up, I may be tempted if the 2" pipe works better.
AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME!!
With the top down, it starts up as a nice growl, then as you hit the gas and get to about 4000 rpm it changes to the normal cry from behind. Letting off the gas gives a nice rumble and a few *subtle* pops.....
I haven't stopped driving for a couple of days....
The grin is even more evil!
Leland, All I can say is thankyou for showing us the way...
Oh, and if anyone's interested... LA Porsche dismantlers has used mufflers for $100 a pair on ebay right now. (no affil etc etc)
Thought you'd ike it ..... I nominate we officially call this mod the LPMM's from now on.
I see you've changed your sig line too!
Kelly,
All modification work was done by "Terry" at the local machine shop. I was refered to them by a local Muffler shop and couldn't be happier with the work. Gave Terry Leland's original photos and said "have at it".
These sound good. What I am wondering is how much sound reductiuon is coming from the box and how much from the pipe size as effectively supercups are just a larger bore U pipe? If we had a U-pipe in a standard bore how loud would that be in comparison to this?
I wonder what an RSR with a LPMM adjustment would sound like?!
I'm an idiot with this stuff but if anyone is interested in hosing me with something like a $100 upcharge to do this stuff I'll buy them. Pete--if you or anyone else doing this is interested in helpin a brotha out [or if someone is about to get mufflers to do it], double up and I'll make you some change on top of what you have to pay to get it done.
This is one of the coolests mods I've ever seen. Forget drilling your airbox... that's amateur stuff now. I can't wait to see what this place comes up with next.
Incidentally, I just installed GHL's on my car - review, sound and video clips to come at a later date - and have a set of stock mufflers waiting for someone to convert to LPM's. PM me if anyone is interested.
For what it's worth I just did a quickie pricing on what it would take to add an electric, switchable bypass. Not cheap to do right: about 200-250 in tubing and flanges from Burns Stainless and $300 for the cutouts, add in the wiring and welding supplies. Still, this is probably just the right wintertime project for my new car...
The electric cutout is 2.25", which would make the bypass close to 100%, I think. The cutouts are variable, so it may be possible to get varied sound. I'll keep y'all posted.
