Top 5 Essential Mods
If you could only make 5 (major) mods to a 993 what would they be (and your estimation of cost)?
I am a relatively new Porsche owner, having picked up my dream car - mint cond'n 96 Targa - a few months ago. I've been surfing the forum for a while now, and this is my first post - so g'day to you all!
(The previous owner did some nice work on the interior with a 3-spoke steering wheel and some wood trim on the gear stick and side panels, but otherwise the car is untouched - for now!)

Ad Gert's front protection bar before you do anything else. HK streets are pretty good but you never know.

These are the ones I did:
1. H&R low springs with Bilstein HD's and ROW 993TT swaybars
2. Factory Strut tower brace and Gert's Protection Bar
3. Removed front bumperettes, resprayed and added Euro clear turn signal lenses (long)
4. Changed out stereo for one that plays MP3's and has AUX input to use iPod
5. Valentine One

Clear front turn signals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Totally cheap, too. AJ USA I think might still sell them. Amber is antiquated in my overly biased opinion.
AJ USA aluminum pedal set. Cheap!!!
Congrats on your Targa.

Three Wheelin'
1. Buy Gert's kit with the PSS7's and RS Sways.
2. Install above kit! While lowering it and giving some neg. camber.
3. 18" rims would be next, but those Targa rims are really nice, so you get a bonus here..
4. Since there is nowhere to drive without the police chasing you if you speed, keep the brakes stock-
5. Since you're just going to be sitting in traffic all day, install the oil cooler fan override switch..
6. While sitting in traffic, bored.. you may as well install a good stereo, maybe the mongkok boys can help?

Race Car
1. Short gearing
2. Light Weight Flywheel
3. Valve Timing Correction/with 964-related pieces
4. Good pair of 18" wheels
5. Lowered/stiffer suspension (including sway bars)
Sorry, don't remember all the prices, but searching the archives will give you the answers.

Great thread -
Here are my favorites, most of which I have done already... in no order... * items are not OEM, but are reversible...
1) Valentine 1 hardwired ($400) *
2) ROW M030 w/Bilstein HD (approx $2000)
3) Motorsound pkg including airbox ($1000)
4) Big Oval Tips ($500)
5) 3M full clear bra ($900) *
6) factory strut brace ($300)
7) sport seats ($3500)
8) HID headlight upgrade ($350) *
9) front protection bar ($250) *
10) new floor mats
11) clear corners (on the list)
12) three-spoke steering wheel (on the list)
13) lwf /RS clutch, short shift kit (on the list)
14) CDR 220 (on the list)
If I could only pick 5, here they are and why....
1) Valentine One - lets me relax when i want to drive sporty and fast. i dont go crazy, but it is nice to know that there is a "safety net". knock on wood - havent even come close to getting a ticket since i bought it...and it has warned me ahead of time many many occasions
2) ROW M030 w/Bilstein - once I got it all sorted out and height correct, etc..., this transformed the way the car drives...so crisp and the ride height looks great
3) Motorsound muffler package or RSRs - i know that most on here love the RSRs... i preferred to stay OEM with the motorsound airbox and motorsound mufflers. either way, I recommend making whatever exhaust upgrade is right for you... the SOUND of these cars is half the fun and will really add to the experience
4) New floor mats - i know this sounds goofy, but they are pretty cheap and will go a long way to make your car look and feel new inside again
5) LWF/RS clutch, short shift kit - although i have not done this, when it is time for my clutch to be retired, i will. seems like a purist mod to do and is said to really transform the drive

1. suspension (shocks, springs, sways, corner balance)
2. Driver's Ed.
3. Driver's Ed.
4. Driver's Ed.
5. Driver's Ed.
Seriously, the car is THAT good. Get some good boingers on and have it set up properly, then learn to drive it in the environment and manner it was meant to be driven in. Number "6" can be any of the others' recommendations.

My list would start with the RSRs.
HD/ROW springs
HID's
Clear bra if your front end is nice.

Woohoo! Welcome to 993 Targa ownership, mtrain!!
Here's what I would do:
1. M030 springs and Bilstein HDs with extra threads (good set-up for the Targa. My install is Friday)
2. LWF/clutch assembly
3. short shifter (going in Friday)
4. satellite radio and upgraded speakers
5. GT2 Strut Tower Brace (have not done it, but other Targas report less creaking after install)

mtrain- welcome!
1. New tires (SO2a)......$1000
2. PSS9s with TT sways (had US M030/ROW springs)....$2500 plus install/alignment
3. LWF (pending)
4. Exhausts upgrade (of your choice)
5. 3-spoke steering wheel (better feel and aesthetics)...AJUSA; $800
My car came fully loaded; motorsound, heated sports seats, litronics, sports suspension, oval tips, alu/carbon trims, 18" hollow spokes etc.etc.. clearly, that influences people's recommendations. Having said that, new tires and suspension upgrade are must-do
ps- other upgrades that I've done include SSK (RS), Lloyds carpets, Steve W GIAC chip, Optima battery, GT2 struts bar, AJUSA race pedals, Rennline dead pedal.
