Fair Price for a 1996-98 C4S
I am thinking about buying a clean C4S. The prices seem to be all over the place. What do you think they are going for with < 50K mi.?

what are you looking for here? i perfect or near-perfect example that you can keep pristine and love on over the years, maintains value, etc. OR are you looking for the driving experience without much concern for originality, resaleability, etc..?
i am sure that you can find a clean, but not pristine 96 with 50k miles on it for the low $40s pretty easy... however, there are 98 examples with less than 20k miles that are every bit worth their prices in the $60s (last year for aircooled, show condition, all original, 1-2 owners, just the right color combo, etc.)
i guess that it is like everything else...its all about what you personally are looking for... for example, one of our rennlist brothers (JASTX) has just listed his 98 c4s in the classifieds. I have driven and inspected this car closely...it is FLAWLESS w/ 15k miles. It probably looks better than the day it drove off the showroom floor. He is the second owner. I dont want to speak for him, but I bet that you could get him down to around $60k for that car. You would have one of the finest, last-year aircooled NA cars out there...but at a higher price than some others...
So what is your condition/price preference?

I paid 42K for my 96 C4S with 57K on it. It had some nice mods i.e. row suspension, TT hollow wheels, turbo tail, billy boat exhaust, etc.
I was thinking the values were still dropping a little. I would have guessed that you could get into a 96 for 40K with 50 K on the clock.

I am looking for a 2nd C4S...more of a daily driver. I currently own a 1997 C4S ( Iam the orginal owner) with 20K mi.
I guess my price range is high $30K to mid $40K. The car doesn't have to be perfect.

Check today's L.A. Times. I already tossed mine, but saw a C4S advertised by a PCA concourse judge... and the price seemed very reasonable. If you can't fine the ad, post back, and I'll go through the trash.

I found it up in Boston, had been on the market 4 months- guy wanted 36.5K for it. Came down to 34, then 32, then 31.5. I called him and we spoke a few times about the car. By this time I had PPI'd two other cars, called about countless others and was tired. I have friends in the car biz and one good friend told me it booked for 26K with the miles and condition. KBB and Edmonds validated a similar price,so I called the guy, said I'll give you 27 and no more......he took it.
Now it need: rotors and pads all the way around (rotors were chunking up front they were so bad). It leaked (and I'm talking a steady leak not a seap or occational drip) from the V.covers I later found. And tires were low on tread. The paint was nicked and chipped, the windshield squeeked...you get the picture. Oddly enough, the interior was immaculate and everything worked (s).
Since........I have taken care of all those issues (and a few others with the help of my RL buddies!). A lady backed into the front end, so it has been painted (All original panels still) from the mirrors forward along with the rims color matched (had to get that thrown in since it was her dime ). The LSD still works as does the front viscus coupling for the FWD. All electric goodies work......and now its time for mods. Can't go wrong, and for probably...28.5K, I'm way ahead of the game and love the car......but I took a crazy chance.

It seems to me that people who know they got a great price are the most likely to reply to a thread like this... a lot of the prices above are low...
Check http://porsche-classified.com/ ... the prices on that site are asking prices, those cars trade about $1k or $2k lower than that... for a nice condition car with 25-30 k miles, $48k to $52k can get you done... if you knock yourself out looking for the best price, or get lucky, then $5-7 k lower...
I don't think these 993's have change prices at all since I got mine in 2003... a friend bought one in February 2005 and the market prices were basically identical...
A fixed rear spoiler will increase the price by about $2k to $2.5k.
Each mile depreciates the car by about $0.20 to $0.25 cents... meaning that if two cars are identical but with one having an extra 10k miles, the price difference will be $2k to $2.5k...
The 1996 trades lower than the 1997, even if the cars are same condition and same mileage... difference is $3k to $5k per year... I recommend getting a 1996 C4S or C2S with 40,000-75,000 miles (or maybe more), with service records, and no major accidents (and original paint)... that seems to be the sweet spot for value...
Also, if you can find one with the mods (modifications) you want, you basically get the mods for free... whereas you'd pay a few thousand to add them yourself later... I recommend PSS9 suspension, aluminum pedals, aluminum shifter ****, and maybe sport seats if you can find them... you should learn to recognize the PSS9 suspension (check for blue coil-over springs), if you find one with it then that's great. A lot of people recommend the light-weight fly-wheel. Don't want to turn this into a discussion of mods, just wanted to hit some of the high points there.

Well again, my 97 was on the market for months before I got it and it started at 36K with 92k+ on the clock. I would love to see that kind of money change hands for those miles, but unless that car is spotless with a full doc. history, original paint and no stories, he may hard pressd to get it. My guess is probablly early 30's, no more than 35K. If it has issues and you are mechanically inclined.....try to steal it! My theory was, with those miles, something is bound to be, or go wrong soon and I might as well buy at a price conducive to dealing with it.
