Mostly it's not about "just going fast" on the track. Outside of wheel-to-wheel, there's a whole 'nother level of situational awareness required when in a mere DE event in something that is: 1. not so visible, and 2. corners in excess of 2g. (Typical minimum apex speed at Thunderhill T1 is ~115 v. ~92 in the faux RS/Spec Miata v. ~88 in something like the warmed over 993 4S v. ~80 in the average advanced/instructor car that's circulating out there. And a real tunnel'd CSR/DSR/whatever is 125+.......)

Then, add in that my baby engined stock 1.3L SR3 doesn't accelerate point-to-point any quicker than a warmed over 993. Yes, on a clear track you're coming off the corner much, much faster; but in our mix-it-up-in-a-DE scenario you've caught someone, and have to accelerate from his speed off the corner to pass. Easy enough to pass under braking, but that's iffy in a DE.

Odd how a friend's E36 M3 (NASA National Champion 2013 in GTS3) is within 5 seconds of what I can do in the SR3.

So, the sports racers when not racing are best reserved for open race tests or private rental days.

Here's one in the RS America from '02 or '03 shot by my friend (and fellow Spec 911 racer, though like me he hasn't raced in years). Start at Laguna T2. I think both of those 993s are RSs--one out of Seattle driven by Val Korry, if anyone here knows him.

The water cooled motors tend to have more torque at higher revs, that's what makes a motor feel fast

I agree. But i was really surprised at how flat the torque curve is on the 3.8. It really pulls from 2k all the way to 7K. The 993 was all 3800-6000. I don't find myself without the right gear at Sebring with this one. The stock NA box in my 993 didn't have a gear for turn 10 or 13.

yeah, the 3.8 is very fast. almost 996 GT3 fast. And I agree, the low end grunt is really really good!
But don't do the same mistake I did; keep the stock headers! I went with aftermarket headers and lost all of the low end grunt. Sure, the car is a tiny bit faster on the track but I will be changing the stock headers back this winter. It is just so much nicer with the torque down low.

The water cooled 4 valve heads and extended rev ranges really make a difference in the torque curves, the go up and stay up compared to the air cooled street motors that go up and then taper off more quickly, the result is less acceleration available in a gear even after weight and aero are factored in
