Default SAI Maintenance

Okay, I have read some of the threads on the SAI ports; enough for me to be dangerous.

My '96 has 37K miles on it now and I was wondering what, if anything, I should do to reduce the clogging of the ports?

Maybe a better question is what causes the carbon build up?

I run Sunoco 94 almost exclusively in the car.

Any other maintenance items I need to be aware of to keep it running?

Easy; good Italian tune-up every weekend and don't drive it to & from work on weekdays. Drop in a can of Techron in with the Sunoco 94 gas 2-3 times a year.

87K miles on my '95 driving this way and no trouble.

Check the "Tech Section" of the pca website. Use search there and it is covered extensively.

There is what seemed to me to be a pretty good DIY for using chemical cleaner to attack buildup, best before it is completely clogged. While I haven't used it yet, I was planning on giving it a whirl this summer. Take a look through the archives (I don't have the thread handy, might even be in RK's response. If not, and search isn't helping, try Robin's site. I think the originator was going to try to get it posted there too.)
I'm going to go against the grain a little here. I can understand that local low speed driving isn't good for the engine in many ways, HOWEVER, I'm not going to not drive my car, so I can make sure it'll be fine whenever I get around to driving it. Not knocking folks who do that, it just isn't my approach. Heck, the drive to my upcoming autox is shorter than my drive to work. I'm still looking forward to going!
Anyway, good luck. I'm planning to try to cleaner thing this summer - unless I'm too busy driving.
Remember, the hours your Porsche spends parked, you don't get those back.

Ever since I started driving my 911 with the motor above 4000 about 20% of any trip, my car seems to be running much better. As a matter of fact, she runs mint.

These cars are ment to be driven and not garage queens or easy on the gas stuff.

Drive and Enjoy.

Thanks guys! The links were very helpful, too.

My oil consumption appears to be extremely low, so I'll keep my eye on that and hope it stays low! I also pulled the plastic under tray as soon as I bought the car (12K miles).

I've been wondering if rusted EGR valves might exacerbate the problem. Just unconfirmed hypothesis at this point. MANY of us are driving around with rusted EGR valves. My SAI ports were completely clogged and my EGR valve was completely rusted apart until the recent rebuild. Coincedence? Dunno. At any rate, it couldn't hurt to check/replace them periodically.
