I had mine replaced at Pioneer Centers, one of the two San Diego area Porsche dealers.
Here's the breakdown from my invoice:
Replaced steering rack - 4.6 hours
Perform Toe alignment as necessary - 1.4 hours
2x P/N 171-419-831-C STEER. GEAR BOOT
4x P/N 999-218-102-02 SCKT SCREW 8X60
1x P/N 993-347-0011-X STEERING GEAR - REBUILT
At $85/hr, the rate at the time (2001), labor was $510. Parts came to around $980, with the rebuilt rack going for $960.

Totally correct but... the price is Euros 1980 new or 1380 with the old core as exchange plus labor.
ZF kit is only the seals as per Graham's post.
Might try the leak stop... as was said, the alternative is changing the rack anyway plus mine is a seep AFAI can see.

I replaced the rack in my 964 last year. Did a bit of research before the job and was cautioned about resealing the rack as the rack itself may be scored and just ruin the new seals. I installed a rebuilt rack. I've since heard that the racks are available through Autozone?
As for using a 964 rack......most of the 964 guys recommend an RS, non power 964 rack for response and not having to worry about the fluid problems. If I have to do it on the 993, I'll go that way.
It's entirely possible to do it yourself. Give it a day to do it at a leisurely pace. Worst part of the job is refitting one of the hydraulic lines to the rack once it's in place. There's a DIY on one of these boards or websites.

john, when was the work on your car done (i just want to get an idea for how current those prices are)?
i have never driven a 964 and i am a little nervous about switching from power steering to non-power steering...parallel parking, here in san francisco, could be perilous without power steering!

July 2001.
Looking at other responses, it looks like the parts cost is pretty stable. The big variable is labor. In 2001 the dealer charged $85/hr. Now they're up around $100, but I don't take my care there. Others are quoting $90/hr for labor at thier dealer today. But I think that was in Virginia, and here in California the rates tend to be much higher.

follow up: new rack is installed and operational!
here is the itemized bill for those who are interested:
power steering rack $1,012.50 p/n 993 347 011 X
boot, steering rack $ 7.95(x2) p/n 191 419 831
alignment came to $108.00 because they had to do a little more than they thought, and the labor charged was 4 hours ($420). i had been thinking about some mods, but looks like this wipes that out...at least i got the car back today (dropped it off this morning).
btw, i have about 1/2 a liter of pentosin ps fluid hanging around so if anyone in the bay area is in a jam over a weekend and needs some give me a holler!

Three Wheelin'
mborkow,
happy to read that your problem is solved.
I'm back from work after a few days, and I checked my car in the garage...no trace of oil at all! So it seems that for me it turned out to be a mistake of my part. I remember having top up the ps fluid after replacing my engine, but probably the circuit and the pump were dry and took all what was in the tank, leaving it to the minimum.
Anyway it's good that you spoke about your "strange noise", because it rang a bell for me to check that ps oil level!
Happy Easter!
