Agreed - the car should be fine to drive now

hmmm, ok, i guess i was affraid that if there was some leak that in the middle of a drive it might suddenly reach that lower threshold and start makint that horrible sound again. therefore, i thought it best to let it sit over night and see if the level remained constant before i headed back out onto the highway.

I have a feeling that the leak will be worse as you are driving anyway. Just keep the CHF-11S and the funnel in a plastic bag in the car, along with a cloth for wiping up any mess. That fluid is nasty.

after refilling the reservoir on saturday night, today when i went down to the car there were fresh little drops of fluid under the car around the firewall...sounds like a leaking steering rack from what people have described..

mborkow,

power steering season?
After reading your thread, I remembered a strange noise I had yesterday in a tournabout. Went in my garage checked the ps fluid...nothing on the gage!

Today I spent my day cleaning the car, tomorrow: investigations. My steering rack was change 30k km away, it should be it...I hope!

So don't worry you're not alone

toga, thank you for the moral support!

just spoke with my mechanic and i am going to bring the car in on wednesday. he said he had checked the ps fluid when the car was in for an oil change 2 weeks ago so i managed to leak about 400 ml (40% of the total amount) of the ps fluid since then. tony (my mechanic) said that it might not be the rack, that it just might be a hose, but that he would check it all on wednesday when i bring in the car.

I had the identical problem. Don't just top-up the power steering fluid but also be sure to check underneath the car for any possible leaks.

what was the resolution with your car?

i am pretty sure mine is leaking :-(
tomorrow i take her into the shop and we will see what my mechanic thinks...i am braced for the worse: a whole new rack and yet another $1k i will drop on this car. that would be $13k in 8 months.

Toga, you are getting away with a bargain if this is what you can change out for... I was quoted Euros 1980 new or rebuilt for Euros 1380 with my old rack as exchange.

Looking at finding the kit from ZF. Might be a DIY.

the rack might be $500, but my mechanic will have to install it and then i need an alignment...close to a $1k when all is said and done (i think)

I refilled today. 50km (30mi) later no leak was observed... I'll see tomorrow. I hope I did not fill it up right after my engine drop. fingers crossed!

"Looking at finding the kit from ZF" is this a kit to repair a leaky rack?
