Red face USAA Insurance and DE

I just received my new policy packet from USAA and noticed an "Amendatory Endorsement" that, among other changes, defines a "Driving Contest or Challenge" as "An activity that challenges the speed or handling characteristics of a vehicle or improves or demonstrates driving skills, provided the activity occurs on a track or course that is closed from non-participants."

I haven't had time to sort through the rest of the policy to determine how this definition is referenced, but I'll bet there is a section that exludes coverage for "Driving Contests or Challenges."

Crud. I have my first DE event in September at Sebring and I have USAA insurance. I was avoiding checking into the issue just hoping I was covered.

I just confirmed with a policy rep that these events are now NOT covered by USAA. My document refers to this as a Florida Ammendatory Endorsement so it may not apply everywhere.

I also noticed that they added exclusions to all the parts that specifically exclude coverage for "driving contests or challenges."

All the rep could suggest was to write a letter to corporate. Maybe we can organize a campaign in conjunction with PCA, Rennlist, etc.?

Curtis,
Where was this amendment in the USAA policy packet? I had recently looked at my policy and did not see that in there. I could have overlooked it though.

What I had read refered to "timed events" being excluded. What I deducted was that DE's were Ok, but TT's, autox or anything else that is timed is not covered (thus I don't push it at TT's...just have fun and no trophies). Note that my policy is for California. Don't know if that would make a difference.

The definition was included in my renewal packet. The page was labeled A100FL - Amendatory Endorsement.

The reason I noticed it at all is because they referred to it in the "Important Messages" on the cover page of the packet.

As a side note to this, my State Farm agent here in Georgia just confirmed that I *am* covered at a DE as long as I am the driver. He called a manager in their claims unit. Hope I never need it, but glad the coverage is there for now.

I just noticed that American Colletor's Insurance offers a Driver's Ed Policy. It is kind of pricey, though. A annual policy is 1.5% of agreed vehicle value with a 20% deductible for damage incurred at a DE event.

Isn't it nice that they won't cover an activity that "improves. . . driving skills."

God forbid we become better drivers....then what would happen?

I fired off a couple of letters today. I even invited the SVP of the region out to Sebring in a couple of weeks. We'll see what happens...

The following is from my insurance policy.

[quote]Exclusions
Loss to any vehicle while it is being operated in a racing facility for the purpose of:
a. Competing in; or
b. In practice or preparation for;
any prearranged or organized racing or speed contest.

I read this to mean once you have been timed you are now self insured. Anyone know the prize for lying about a $50,000 insurance claim? Felony and a new roommate.

I am insured by State Farm. My agent indicated that since a Drivers Ed is not a competitive event ( maybe he has seen my driving !!!!) and is not a race or timed that it definitly is covered by them. Have other State Farm insured individuals other than Chris in Atlanta, heard the same thing ????

I have State Farm. Went off roading at a DE last week and found out tire walls and body panels don't mix

My agent took the info for the claim and told me to call back with the name of the shop I want to use for the repairs. I had the name/number for the chief instructor and my instructor for the event. They only wanted my instructor's name and number.

As things progress I'll post updates.

I have heard of loopholes the insurance company can use with the definition of "preparation for racing" If your car has susbstanial track modifications your coverage at a track may be at risk.

Also your insurance covers your car, regardless of who is driving. I found this out the hard way.
