Is 60K on a 993 too much mileage?

Is 60K on a 993 too much mileage?
In my searching for my 993, I have found a 96 993 Targa that I think I can get at a really good price primarily because its mileage is high at 60,000 miles. And I am stretching the budget anyways so its attractive to me.
My previous car, a 83 911SC, had 130,000 miles and was still going strong. That is over twice the mileage on the 993. Can I expect this kind of longevity? I use the car daily and expect to have it for a long time, but I only put on about 6000 miles/year. This means to get to 130,000 miles I will drive the 993 over 10 years!
The SC engines are bulletproof. How about the 993 assuming proper oil changes, etc? I would hate to buy it and face a valve job or worse?

it should be just good (assuming car has been taken care of).
You should be able to drive with it easily that 10 years w/out major issues (you do have to change clutch & naturally normal naintenance items, of course) but the engine & the car overall should be just fine after 130 000 miles.
I have no personal experience of a 993 with that many miles but judging what I've read/heard, 993's should be the best air cooled Porsches so far! (who knows, maybe they'll turn back to air cool engines again...)
So, don't turn it down that car only because it has 60k, it's really not that much

I have 65K problem free street only miles. PPI and maintenance records are a must. EJ can speak for his 100K miles which include track.

Don't worry about the mileage so much as how it's been cared for.
Mine's a '96 with 69K of street miles and a VERY comprehensive service history from the previous ( and first ) owner.
Wish this damn rain would stop in Santa Cruz........

At 60k, your car is nicely broken in. I bought my 95 993 two years ago with 60k. Today I've got 90k and the car has never felt stronger. I track it hard and drive it everyday with no problems whatsoever! Just make sure it's been properly cared for.
In the two years of ownership, overhead costs have been very reasonable. Did a 60k mainentance, replaced rotors and pads, and bought a full set of tires twice (tracks love tires and I love burning em!).

Like Oleg, I enjot the track too. Just flipped 102,000 miles at VIR this weekend where I was faster than 4 Ferrari Challenge cars, and a bunch of other cool stuff.
Still has original clutch. LIke you I needed a high mileage to fit the budget and I got mine with 80,000 about 18 months ago. (my how time flies when you're having fun )
If the PPI checks out, then I say buy it. I drive mine pretty hard on the track and no problems.
Look for a write up on the G&W weekend soon with pics, but suffice to say for now: how many times have you been passed by a Le-Mans winning 911 GT-1, Daytona 24 winning 964 GT-3 Car and the last air cooled 911 (RSR) ever brought to the US in the same lap? I think when the GT-1 went by and shifted gears next to me, he burned the paint off the side of my car from the flames coming from the exhaust. Needless to say it was an incredible weekend at the track. Almost 300 track miles. A good way to end the season.

36k for a well maintained 96 Targa is a great price even if it does have 60k. However, I think it is probably an avg. price for the current market conditions and the mileage. If the car had say...20k miles it would probably go for 45k, where a year ago it would have went for 60k.

For the info I have seen a 993 with 455,000 kms which is about 300,000 miles on flat 6 magazine. It is a french magazine specialized on rear engine porsches.
The car was in great conditions and never had the engine opened, just regular maintenance. So it really depends on the way the car was driven and maintained that is all that matters.

Beware carbon buildup in the engine heads and emission system. I just got stung by it on my 96 C4 with 54K miles on it. And the problem is, you wont know about it until it's too late. I am not even sure how this can be predicted. I am hearing more and more about this issue on porsche cars from mechanics and is an expensive undertaking to fix!

What are the symtoms of the carbon buildup problem? Ie poor running, etc?
This car is driven year round so it may be okay. It most likely needs a couple of track events to do a "tune-up" on it.
Any more information?
