I have a 95, and recently I purchased a ROW Euro front cover. In doing so I decided to refinish the hood and fenders being that the car has 8 yrs of rock chips. Now I am going to just paint the whole car, all trim removed, no body work, european ppg paint/clear, the works just scuff the rest and shoot. It seems on this board everyone wants a car with no paint work, but a car that has been driven is going to have chips. I plan on keeping the car at least another 4 years. My question is; Would you rather have a car that has original paint w/ chips etc, or one that had no bodywork done but a high quality re-paint, if both were the same price? Just curious

Personally I wouldnt mind as long as all the work and the reason for the work was documented well.
I personally, if looking for a car would rather have nice paint instead of rock chips. As long as all is well under the paint.

I agree with 993chaz. Plus if I were going to keep the car for many years, like forever with my C4S, I would /will do a repaint at some time or another. As long as it is documented (and why not take some digital pics before, during and after and keep those with the records), I would rather have a clean repaint than an original with rock chips galore.

I would also recommend the photos... the idea to show that there was no body damage being hidden by repaint. Be sure you have the photos date-stamped, and maybe shown in front of the paint shop.
My choice would be to have the original paint, even with a few small rock chips. Some of those may be covered with a little dab of touch-up. The front bumper cover being repainted is not, in my opinion a big deal. I wonder if a really good paint guy can do a better job of touch-up than a doofus like myself?

The car has about 64k on it, and the hood and fenders are pretty bad (we would notice, the average joe would not). I figured why have half the car look nice and shiny. It doesn't hurt that I have my own body shop. I think I am going to take pictures once the car is torn down for proof. I am also adding some 18 in SSR GT 3 wheels. After it is all done I'll post some before and after pics.

Interesting that this should come up. I will today be picking up my 993 after having the front bumper, bonnet and two side arches resprayed. One way to keep a prospective buyer comfortable may also be to not change your windshield and front head light covers- mine are also covered in stone chips and whilst I respray the car, I am leaving these on the car. If anyone asks why the car was resprayed, I will not only have pics but will still have other evidence to corroborate the fact that my car was resprayed due to stone chips.
Actually, I may not have resprayed except for the fact that my rear right fender was recently the canvass for a rather creative cretin with a key (ie: car was vandalised) and hence I decided that the paint would no longer be original on the rear right fender so why not go the whole hog and redo the car).

I agree with the photos. My car is going to really need the entire front painted after a rock flinging match got the better of me! See kids, throwing rocks really will end in tears. I'm going to have to do the pre-paint photo documentation thing to ease the minds of future buyers. Because the truth is that it will be an innocent repaint. Do it for yourself obviously (the repaint), but document for future reference.
Cheers,
Dylan.
p.s. Hey maybe you can do mine in the future if you do a good job?

To me the issue here is the quality of the repaint. I don't mean to set off a firestorm here, but I don't think the factory Porsche paint job is that great. It's good for a high volume production paint job, but I don't think it is as good as a high quality custom paint job that has been color sanded and buffed. For a short time I owned both the 96 993 and a 74 911s targa, both painted grand prix white. Looking at the cars side by side, it was obvious that the paint on the 74 was far superior to that of the 96, even though the 74 paint was three years older. The guy who painted the 74 was even more militant about factory paint jobs. He thought they were all crap. He bought a brand new black Chevy Tahoe, drove it about 6 months and then tore it apart, stripped it down to bare metal and repainted it. There wasn't a scratch in it, but he just could not stand the factory paint job. Sounds a little extreme to me, but when he got done with it, you could literally shave in the reflection from the paint.
To me, paint or body work is like any other part of the car. As long as it is fixed correctly and the job is high quality, neither paint nor body work would deter me from buying a car.
Just my thoughts, Rob.

Aaron, Post some pics of the car after your repaint job! Also seeing you own a body shop, what would be an estimate for repainting a whole 993 in the factory black color? My car is 97K miles and their are alot of rock chips on the hood and bumper. Thinking about going the same route as you later on in a year or 2 when I save some money up for the paint job. And what is the name of your body shop btw?

One other point to consider- if your car is light metallic such as polar silver, you will need a top notch painter. An improperly done light metallic respray will result in blotching under sunlight and fluorescent light- my front had to be resprayed twice as I was not satisfied with the blotching- thankfully I know the painter and he redid it for free.
Another point to consider- make sure your painter matches the "orange peel" effect of the respray with the original paint. As previously mentioned, factory paint jobs are rarely as good as the resprays that are done by the local paint shop. If the bonnet etc is "too perfect" with minimal orange peel, it will be incongruous when compared with the original paint elsewhere on the car.
