NOOOOO-Not the stretchy spring sound...

Just got back from filling up my gas tank for a DE tomorrow.
As I was driving home, I noticed a squeek coming from the clutch pedal.
In the garage, while checking it out, I happened to open the door and listen to the transmission area while I activated the clutch.
Dang, I'm hearing that dreaded stretchy spring sound.
I bought the car used with 10,500 miles on it. Took it in last fall at 11,000, and they replaced the slave cylinder because it was making the stretchy sound. I had read on the board that this is a harbinger of problems to come, and wanted to nip it in the bud. Now, 2500 miles later, I'm hearing the sound again.
I had a very good race shop owner check out the car for a couple of things last week after a two day DE over Memorial day. He said the car felt fine, especially the clutch and trans.
I read the recent hanging clutch pedal thread, and I have no problem with that.
So my questions:
Can you have the stretchy spring sound without a dying slave cylinder?
Am I risking a failure doing a DE tomorrow?
Thanks in advance for any and all answers/insights.

Thanks for the reassuring responses.
I don't feel anything unusual in the pedal, so I'll assume everything is fine.
Just didn't want to find myself stuck at Blackhawk.

Mike,
Mine started squeaking again after about 1k miles from a slave cylinder change. Clutch is fine though. No worries, just keep the tin (or in your case the canvas) up.

thanks EJ
I should be glad I got the extra 1000 miles before the sound came back.
In this case it's the tin. the canvas doesn't go to the track.

I had my slave cyl replaced last summer by my P dealer & the stretchy spring sound returned about 6 mo later. I've not gotten around to taking the car back, have continued to drive it, did a DE weekend & have had no problems.
So when do you return here for a <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" />

I replaced mine not too long ago, and I too get the occasional squeeky sound. I believe it will progress from squeeky to a notchy pedal, and get "notchier" from there. That was my experience. I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi Dan
The Newlyweds haven't invited us yet. Perhaps the honeymoon isn't over. Ahh, young love...
David
On the whole I'd rather not have the notchy pedal.
I'll report if the DE has any impact on it.
Thanks all.

When i had my new lever installed (hanging clutch pedal, had slave cylinder changed bofore), my mechanic mentioned about the noise and showed me a diagram where it showed the part that he thought cause the noise. He said it needs to be lubricated and the engine has to be dropped. He said not to worry about it for now until the the next service when the engine will be dropped. I don't think that sound has anything to do with the slave cylinder.

Hi Mike,
My clutch has been making the noise for at least 6 years, probably longer. No problems with the clutch pedal feel or return.
To be more exact, I hear a stretching sound when I operate the clutch pedal at normal speed. But, if I operate the pedal slowly, I hear discrete clicks corresponding with the pedal's (slow) movement. Again, no notchiness, just the sound that I can only hear with the engine off, driver's door open.

Thanks for the replies.
What you describe is exactly what I'm hearing.
SB
At least if you hear it, you won't have to worry about it now.
Thanks all, I'm off to Blackhawk Farms with an untroubled mind.
(Man, I love this board.)

Hi Mike,
I don’t think there’s been any “failures” attributed to slave cylinder problem. The squeaks can only be heard with the engine off (at least in my case) and the hanging clutch pedal is more of a nuisance than anything else. I had my slave replaced and the noise has come back. I think the noise just a matter of the rubber bushing rubbing against the plunger. I’ve also had the pedal lever replaced with the updated one, and I don’t have any hanging pedal symptoms.

You have most definitely been infected with the dreaded hanging clutch pedal disease. No reason to panic, or replace anything immediately, although if it bugs you, I recommend the pedal lever upgrade. Refer to the recent <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=003778" target="_blank">"hanging" clutch pedal</a> thread.
