Cary,

What is that black line under the pass headlight?

That sounds a bit steep. See if your shop can remove the front bumperettes and fill the holes and include that in the price (if you're interested in doing that). You'll need longer (euro) turn signal lenses... clear would look good on your car. You may also want to replace your fog lights with turbo "S" ducts... get them to paint them at the same time! Use the respray as an opportunity for a minor appearance upgrade!

Steve

The black line is the failed gasket that is stapled to the top edge of the bumper. I thought the estimate was a little on the high side but the shop is the best in town. Oh you guys and your slippery slopes. I autocross...A stock and the 'S' ducts woud put me in some modified class....but I may go there eventually when it's clutch time. For now I'm content w/ RSR's ROWM030/bilstein HD's and a strut bar. I could live w/ the rock ships and there are many....drafting those 18 wheelers....anyway I have stress cracks in the paint that the shop says came from the bumper being used....most have happened in a parking lot....oh well.

If it's just a respray of the bumper then the price is a bit high. If it includes blending the bumper into the hood and fenders, it's not an unreasonable price. Most high end shops will strongly suggest that you blend the bumper, esp with a tricky color like silver.

The shop usually blends. In my case he was going to pull the bumper...as I have a few rock chips above the bumper line which I was going to leave alone. Like you say silver is tricky...

Man, Cary...your bumper is trashed.

Sorry if I put any of those chips on there!

I seem to find new ones in my bumper every day, so I'll be interested to see what other prices you find for a respray.

As for changing classes in autocross, come on over to A Street Prepared!

See you at the races!

Cary,

Can you do the Euro "bumperette-removal" thing and stay in stock class? Do that, and get the "s" ducts painted. It takes 5 minutes to install them, so you can pop your fog-lights back in for your autocross days.

Maybe you should consider one of the "Invincishield" thingees to prevent future damage after you're all painted up?

I just bought a TT bumper and had it painted to match my car and installed on my C4 Cab. The shop charged me $385. You are getting ripped off at $600.

Afterwards the bumper will stand out being too pretty. You will have to think about the headlight lenses, fog and turn signal lenses, fenders, hood. What about the windshield? With silver it might come down to a complete repaint.

Waht is your mileage?

Don't forget to make a photo documentary. Otherwise every potential buyer will think you are concealing an accident.

72.5K miles. Feehliks... you are correct about the where do you stop conundrum. While my 912 is a garge queen the 993 is driven driven driven.
BTW I will be buried in this car.

If it's truly one of the better shops in town then it's not just a respray. Here's how I see it based on the photo:

Remove bumper from body
Remove all lighting fixtures
fill and sand the rock chip holes
Prep surface and paint
Reassemble all components

It's all labor. If you have some deep chips, JUST repainting it looks terrible because the paint forms pits where the chips use to be. From 20 feet away it'll look fine, get up close and it's obviously been repainted.

Cheaper shops will simply acid wash the surface and hit it with the spray gun. Probably under $200.00 for something like that.

Hey TamiyaGuy.....that is precisely what the shop priced. Thanks for adding a little clarity. His estimate had 4.6 hours to take it apart and put it back together and 6.2 hours of refinish work....so 10.8 hours total for $424.76. The balance of the $605.68 is for materials.

Thumbs up

I just had my bumper cover resprayed in Arctic Silver a few months ago and I think that is about what I paid. IMHO it is not too much at all, for a thorough job by a top shop.

BTW my cover came out perfect and I only wsh I would have done it sooner. Hope you have the same good luck.

I had mine priced in CT and it was in the $600 range. It was a high end shop that specializes in Porsche's and I have seen their before and after work and impressed. Make sure you try to get the shop to guarantee.
