Question Search for steering rack fluid?

While I am waiting for the steering rack part to arrive at my P dealer, I decided to check the resevoir to see if they "topped it off" as they said they would. The resevoir does not register any fluid on the dip stick attached to the cap. Thank you P dealer for a well executed task!

So, here we are on a Memorial Day weekend, P dealer is closed until Tuesday. So...I began to call around for any parts store open.

Now, looking up in the owner's manual the type of fluid (page 98 if you want to read along), it requires "Pentosin CHF 11 S". It sounds as if I should be going to a pharmacy to fill a prescription.

What are my chances that Pentosin CHF 11 S is the same as the off the shelf products at Pep Boys, etc. or am I stuck going back to the P dealer for their special medication.

Do any of you know what fluid to use in place of Pentosin CHF 11 S?

Can I do any further damage driving with a low reservoir. Interesting, I am not experiencing any steering problems or any leakage on the garage floor.

This is the 2nd installment of my saga.

1st installment is below.

Well. I did a search within the 993 Forum and it told me that ATF Dextron fluild is the fluid for non turbo 993 (red color) vs the Pentosin CHF 11 S which is for Turbos (green color). Found it and just refilled the resevoir. This is a great forum. Sign me up for membership.

Mark-

Actually, the pre 96 Porsches came with the ATF Dextron fluid you topped off with. Since 5/96 the cars were filled with Pentosin chf11s. I just went searching for this fluid and found it only at the Porsche and Audi dealers in town.

Since you will be having your rack changed out in the near future, filling with the Dextron won't make a difference. However, when they do the rack change, be sure they use the Pentosin when filling your system back up as that is what Porsche calls for in the cars now.

BTW, did you check the fluid level with the car at idle?

I asked about power steering fluid fluid here-

Good luck with the rack switch!

Default PS Fluid

My 3/96 1996 C4S manual specifies Dextron and has Dextron in the reservour. FYI Turbos specify Pentosin according to my 96 owners manual.

First I'd like to ammend the 5/96 date to 3/96. Sorry....

The wording from the service manual goes, " Porsche started to fill the brake systems w/ Pentosin CHF11S (green) in March 1996. ATF was used before then. Pentosin and ATF are miscible. This means that Pentosin can be used to top off the fluid level in 993 vehicles before the aformentioned introduction date. On vehicles with Pentosin filling, always fill or top the system with Pentosin."

You can draw your own conclusions as to what that means.

My local Napa Auto Parts carrries Petosin here in Southern NJ. You may want to see if there is one near you. No affiliation, etc.

You can find Pentosin here:

http://www.germanautoparts.com/

Click on "Chemicals & Lubricants" in the left column.

BTW, I think the makers of Dexron should have really called it Dextron because most everybody puts that "t" in there where it doesn't belong. I did this for years until it was pointed out to me.
