Question Transmission Fluid Flush

Ok, I've got a new bug. I want to flush my transmission fluid. What do you guys use? What do you guys recomend?

I've read the p-car website instructions and experience. Now, I'm looking for more.

BTW, is a transmission flush part of the 30K service?

George,

Did mine about 2 months ago and just last weekend did a friend of mine's 93'C2. We both used Redline oil.

Kevin,

How would you like to help with a third? I'm thinking about doing it on Saturday if I don't go to MSR with Bob.

I'm debating between the Redline and Swepco. Is there a specific type of fluid I need to look for?

Zimm's has the SWEPCO 201, GL5 gear lube 80w90, (1 gallon) for $35. Is that enough to do it?

George,

Saturday after 3 pm is OK with me. You only need 4 qts of oil with the flush, Redline is 75w90 don't know about Swepco but 1 gallon is more than enough.

E-mail me off line if you need help and on/after 3 pm is OK with you. For sure that 2 people are easier to do this.

Cool

I would highly recommend Mobil 1 Tranny fluid 75w90 and not Swepco for the G50 Tranny. I've tried both, and with Mobil 1, tranny runs much smoother. In addition, many mechanics (as well as 964 and 993 folks) have told me G50's do better with Mobil 1-type fluids.

Just some friendly feedback

Guys,

Had mine flushed (I know, I'm lazy) at TPS couple of months back with Mobil 1. I've been happy with it. Aside from cold notchiness between 1st & 2nd very smooth. Of course, now that the summer heat is coming on the 1-2 notchiness is going away rapdily.

Did mine a few months ago using Amsoil. The 4.83% increase in fuel comsumption is very noticable.

Thanks Jeff and rcwelch,

Looks like Kevin has agreed to help me this Saturday. Ben, you are more than welcome to join us. I've decided to go with Redline, don't ask me why, I just like their products. My car does have 53K miles and I don't feel like waiting another 7K (especially as hard as I drive it).

Did mine last weekend. The DIY pages on the P-car website where very helpful. Took me about an hour. I filled the tranny with Mobil 1 gear oil and it shifts smoothly although it's been warm in Virginia this spring.

George,

Thanks for the invite - but I'll be down at TWS this weekend. First time out on Kumho's! All that watching I did at TMS last weekend was torture!

Good luck with the flush!

This is my recommendation on the transmission fluid choices.

If your transmission is in tip top condition, and it shifts smoothly with no crunchy or bumpy feeling between the gears and you live in a fairly warm climate area (IE S, California) I would recommend Mobil 1 or Redline synthetic 75w 90 gear oil.

If your transmission is showing signs of syncro wear, for example hard shifting with 1st and 2nd gear when the transmission is cold, or not being able to shift to first gear unless the car is completely stopped and that you live in a area where the climate can get down to the 30s I would recommend the Swepco 201 fluid.

I made my conclusion after trying Mobil 1, Redline, Redline mix, Regular Dino gear oil, and Swepco 201.

Robin,

Not that I have a hard time shifting or live in a cold climate, but I am curious about the Swepco product. Is it a dino? I’ve never really heard much about it and their website recommends it for heavy duty trucks (no where did I see sports cars).

We live in a similar climate (mine is a little warmer), so I am curious to know what you are using right now and why.

Sounds like fun you guys. I'm doing a rotor and brake pad change on Saturday. Depending on when you start I would like to help out. I probably need to do a flush as well and would like to know how to do it.

Let me know what fluid you decide on and where you got it.

George,

The first fluid I changed to was the Mobil 1 synthetic 75w90 gear oil, at first I loved how smooth the transmission shifted and how much less effort was to operate the gear lever compared to the factory fluid. But when winter came, I discovered that when the transmission was cold I could not get the shifter into first gear unless the car was completely stopped, and that there was a grinding sound when I shifted to 2nd. But once the transmission is warmed up the symptom was gone. My theory was that the Mobil 1 fluid was extra slippery so that when it is cold it is really coating the syncros and preventing the syncros from working properly. To proof that theory I then switched to some standard Dino 75w90 trans fluid and the cold shifting problem was solved, but then the transmission felt exactly like it was before with the facotry fluid. Of course that's wasn't good enough for me...

So I proceeded with trying out the Redline synthetic fluids, and had the same result as the Mobil 1 75w90. I also tried a one quart different weight Redline mix and was also not satisfied with the result.

After talking to Steve at Rennsport I was told to give the Swepco 201 a try, and that's what I did, and have been using same fluid ever since.

The Swepco provided a much better "buffer" when the transmission was cold, now I rarely feel the 2nd gear crunch while the transmission is cold, and that I can shift into 1st gear without any problem.
