Question PSS-9 DIY special tools question

I'm gathering info for an upcoming PSS-9 install, and I was wondering if I really need to have the Hazet open sockets (19, 21, & 22mm)? If so, can someone tell me where to get these or if there are equivalents from other tool manufacturers?

Default Deja Vu

I sent out a thread similar to this last week and got great responses...there is a way to use a 13/16" spark plug socket with an external hex pattern on it to put a crows foot with the torque wrench. You can hold the shaft with the allen wrench from inside the shaft of the socket.

I think that is all the special tools needed. An air gun is usually required to break the nut loose however.

Thanks, Bruce - I believe this is the thread you speak of:

Shock tower tool in Seattle area

Now I see why this didn't show up in my search. If you search for "PSS-9 socket", your thread will not show up - you have to search for "PSS-9s socket".

I'm putting my Bilstein HD's in soon and will not buy the Hazlet tool for it. I'll be using air tools. If that doesn't work, I'm sure an offset box wrench with breaker bar will do it.

If all 3 sizes are needed, I don't understand how one 13/16 adapted socket would work?

Just be careful. You can strip either the threads on the shock strut if you are using an impact socket. If you use a wrench to hold the nut, with a 7mm hex on the air gun/wrench to turn the strut - you *will* strip that out...

Also- for others - if you use air tools on PSS9s - you run the risk of damaging the adjustment valve - according to Bilstein or Viper Bob (I can't remember who told me that - but I think it was one of them??)..?

Reading the replies above - I really like the spark socket idea..!!! That's a "keeper" for the archives! Thanks!!!!

OK - you need a way to turn a "sunken" top strut nut on (into?) the top of the plate. You'd use a long allen key through the hole of the top of the sockect (where the rachet would normally attach) - to hold the strut in place as you turn the nut with the socket/claw foot/torque wrench..

Make more sense now??? It sounds confusing until to assemble/disassemble these - then you'll see exactly how it'll work...

HTH!!..!

Air tools for me for removal ONLY on that strut top nut! Iwil torque the nut down with the 13/16 and the allen key to hold the strut from moving.

If the 13/16 socket replaces the 21mm socket, then what replaces the 19mm & 22mm sockets?

Why can't you just use an offset box wrench and hold the stud with the hex wrench?

With the amount of pss-9's that he's selling and installing, I wonder if they ARE the same person?
