Angry Where Are All of The Alternators?

I've called about 20 or more companies for their stock alternators and no body has them. I even called the stealerships and they don't have them in stock either. They explained that Porsche has been sending out some of their electonics to Ukrain for manufacturing. Well that explains everything. Thanks alot Putin!!!! Does anyone have any suggestions?

Ken

I have one brand new in the box I'm not using.
Originally thought my alternator was going but it was just the smaller supercharger pulley I'm using.

Have the original rebuilt. The Bosch reman ones are trash. Cheaper to rebuild and much higher quality. It's not like the rotor or stator wear out.

Yep great idea, but the center shaft that holds the hex/spline tool striped. Can the repair shops repair that or do I have to take it to a machine shop?

Thanks,

Ken

I have a perfectly working one with the same problem. I'm sure it can be repaired, but I don't know where to take it.

Ken,
Short of welding the head of an allen bolt to the end (and then turning down the weld diameter), there really isn't anything a machine shop can do to repair the stripped splines.
Also, your bearings have play.

In the meantime, this stuff is just collecting dust...

You dont need to use a spline tool in the end, there are a few other ways to remove/install that are in posts on here somewhere!

Honestly, just have a machine shop weld a hex head to the end of the shaft and make sure the threads stay clean. I see an Allen head not much better than the 12 point for longevity.

Perfect time to install a Clewett and be done with this whole thing.

The quality of a rebuild is dependent to some extent on the quality of the core of the unit it is rebuilt from, Taking your alternator to a local electric motor /alternator rebuild shop and having it rebuilt is the best way to get a rebuilt alternator with a long service life vs one built from their stock of cores. Also, our alternators have a specific longer and very important hot wire mounting block that protects the wire from touching the alternator body with catastrophic results. Your alternator, if original, has one and so the one rebuilt from it will have it if it is reused vs one from the rebuilder's stock that may have been built from a similarly configured alternator and features a shorter block common to similar Bosch alternator configurations. In addition, the star socket on the end of the armature shaft is a bit unique, and when yours is rebuilt and if the armature is retained the rebuild will retain that feature vs a square or some other shaft end feature. In most cases, if the shaft spins smoothly without any lateral play a failed alternator generally just needs new brushes and or the diode bridge. The alternator on a 996 forward can have its brushes and diodes replaced without disassembling the housing, go figure?

I bought a simple rebuild kit and did it all myself. New bearings, new brushes, copper races, cups, and voltage regulator.

Did it involve pressing bearings into the cast housing?

If the shaft end is stripped a screw extractor bit can probably hold it while removing the pulley, also you may have used the improper star tool and a different one will hold it just fine. If you just want to hold it to tighten the pulley nut I seem to recall someone describing putting a screwdriver through the fan into the alternator to bind it while loosening/tightening the nut.
