Default To OEM or not to OEM

Was replacing the standard bulbs with the LEDs that Tore offers and broke one of the turn signal assembly housing. I can get replacement units from Pelican of either OEM or Hella. The OEM is $72 more than Hella and I'm curious what others think about spending the extra $$ for OEM. My car is not a show queen nor a crazy low mileage car so is OEM worth it?

The OEM’s are actually manufactured by HELLA. I ordered an OEM replacement taillight and it has HELLA branding on it. There may be a difference in color, though, if you order directly from HELLA. Porsche may have different quality standards that must be followed before they’ll allow their name to be directly associated with a part, whereas HELLA might not be as strict.

Something that Porsche USA stridently markets but is simply not true.
I worked for several years in product management for a tier-one automotive parts manufacturer.
When the car was in production and Porsche ordered parts for installation in manufacturing they may have had higher quality specifications some developed by Porsche but most developed by Hella and tested by Hella.
Once the part passed into the aftermarket either through the dealer or through warehouse distributors Hella or its now, 25-years-later low volume part contractor factory controls quality and there is no difference in quality between ones distributed through dealer service parts or a Hella boxed part through a warehouse distributor. They are made on the same line with the same tooling to the same specifications.

But wouldn’t a brand new unit stand out like a sore thumb as compared to the other side?Put up a WTB thread for a good condition used OEM unit.

It’s only super obvious which taillight lens is new when they’re in direct sunlight, then you notice the contrast/wear and tear on the older ones.

An older lens can always be removed and polished up on a wheel to make it shiny.

I have factory smoked tail lights on my old GTI. I accidentally cracked one of the lights and bought a replacement. Unfortunately, 15+ years of sun had faded the original lights and the new one was much darker. I ended up replacing the other side to match.

Didn't know the GT-1 came with tinted taillights. ;-)
