Default Tire Decision - Michelin Pilot Sport 4S vs PS2

Will be replacing the 18" Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires this winter based on age - ten years this spring. So replace with Pilot Sport 4S vs Pilot Sport PS2? Not interested in any other brand but Michelin.

Not trying to start another tire thread and but would appreciate opinions from anyone who has recently made this buying decision for their 993.

My use is summer warm temps only, dry weather. No track use and mainly interested in ride quality and lowest road noise possible. I realize that the 4S is the latest model. My indy recommends the PS2 but the Tire Rack recommends the 4S.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks guys.

I recently went from PS2 to PS4S on my '95 C2, and find the 4S to be a much better tire. Dry handling is as good if not better than the PS2, wet handling is excellent, ride quality is better. That said, I am only about 5K miles into the tires, so we'll see how they hold up in the long run.

Other pluses IMO, are the 4S are pretty much 20-year newer construction, have a 50% higher tread life rating, and cost less.

Recent test showed less than a one second advantage on PS2 vs 4S

Save the money.

Love my PS4S

Tire Rack has both in stock and sees no delivery issues in future. My size is 265/35 ZR 18.

Mike, I'm running the Pilot Sport 4S and love them. That said, I have not bought a high performance, "normal" street tire for a 993 in, well, maybe ever since all of my prior tires were either Hooser R6s, BF Goodrich R1s or Michelin MPSCs. For regular road driving, the 4Ss seem to do everything I want. I drove to Charleston and then to the Upper Peninsula on two, separate trips last year. Very impressed with the rain traction and resistance to hydroplaning. Dry weather grip was more than enough.

Do not have the 4s on my 993, but ran them on a z06 that I recently sold. Really exceptional street tire, as others have stated. PS2 is a fairly old tire...the PS4S is an evolution of that tire. Should be marginally, if not noticeably better in almost every way. Not sure why the shop recommends the older technology PS2.

Wish Michelin made the 4S in a 295/30!

If I had the option, I'd get 4s

Unfortunately, very few options for 285/30/18. I'm sticking with Ps2. Sport Cup 2 makes no sense for my application.

I’ve had Cup2s, Re71Rs, nitto NT01s and now on PS4Ss. I do mostly mountain driving. We get up to series speeds on the twisty roads. Very much like track type of driving.
The Cup2s are excellent tires. but, only on dry. When it’s wet they get twitchy not good. In the dry once it’s warmed up they are awesome. Same goes to NT01s and Re71Rs. I know you said only Michelin but wanted to let everyone know my experience with these tires. That being said these tires don’t last. Less than 2 months and they all are toast.
now that winter is upon us I recently put PS4Ss. Excellent wet traction. Dry is also very good. I’d say Cup2s are better in dry once heated up without a doubt. My car is harsh. I couldn’t tell you about the ride quality vs the others. Same goes for the ride noise as my car is super loud I have no idea.
I would recommend the PS4Ss if you are not doing series mountain driving or track driving. For all other reasons PS4Ss best there is.
here is a video on PS4Ss on heavy rain. We were cooking it. There is no way you could do half that speed on Cup2s.

Default Tire choices

Michelin Matters...but, so do Continentals. Their Extreme Contact Sports match the Michelins referenced. They come in sizes that the "M"s do not, are cheaper, and per Tire Rack and other comparison data, are terrific. Such is my personal experience wet or dry, pushing things. Very good treadwear. I've had lots of Michelins and these are rivals.

Your car sounds great! It’s also another example of why you don’t need major HP to have fun in a 993. I’ve discovered over my years of driving track and local twisty roads you can go too far with HP and ruin the rhythm that makes driving twisties fun. In my current 993 that means turning up the boost controller too much. I leave a lot of power on the table in exchange for that magic rhythm.

Thank you for the compliment. I love this car. I totally agree with you. My 993 has stock engine, no cars and fister IIIs. Nothing got away from me in the mountains yet. I drive around with GT3s, lotus evoras M4s, huracans, you name it.
here is another video. Turn the volume up. If you ask me that’s how a Porsche should sound like. Camera car is a tuned corvette chasing me while I’m chasing(being slowed down) by a 650hp M2.
this run was on PS4Ss too.
