Post Body Color Wheels: Any Opinions?

I've seen several photos of "concours" quality 993s and other models in which the wheels have been painted to match the exterior color of the car. On the photos I've seen the result is quite striking but I'm curious regarding people's experience/opinion. I guess to some extent it depends on the color of the car. If you've done this with your wheels, I'd appreciate your insights as well. In addition, does anybody know an easy way to "doctor" a photo of your car to "virutally" try out the color change? Thanks.

I looked at a red 993TT with red wheels. The super cup 993's had one red and one yellow wheel on each side. My turbo twist wheels are scratched up so I considered this but is too much even for a track car. I do like the look of black wheels.

I am not high tech enough to change colors on the photo program so I used a profile photo and markers to get a feel for it.

I did the Fuchs (black centers) on my platinum metallic 911SC, and they looked very striking. I also had a grand prix white 88 3.2 Carrera and 87 930 with white Fuchs centers (photo below). I thought boh cars looked fabulous.

But I have seen a guards red 964 with the entire rim painted guards red, and I thought it looked terrible. I think the body-color keying on the Fuchs works well because you have the bright anodized silver lip between the center and the tire to contrast.

I suppose you could do just the "spokes" of the Cup rim in color and leave the rim silver. But I think the color-keying really works best on the lighter cars.

Post a picture of your car and I'll see if I can do the wheels to match and post the results.

Hi tangram!
In my humble opinion vjd3 is right when he says that the unpainted outer rim of the Fuchs wheel is the key to the solution of looking good.

The rather modern wheels like cup1+2 look stupid if they are completely painted. I saw a 993 RS with the split rims only the center of it was painted in the coulour of the car (speed-yellow) and it looked brilliant. A friend of me has the 18' speedlines on his 965T2, which centres are polished and they look superb, I saw the same rims on a 964C4 withe the centers in the shade of the car and I must admit that the result was OK but not that stricking since the car had a dark coulour (darkgreen met.). But if you try to do the same with a one piece rim then I think the result is more than er... hasardous!

But as always my taste mustn't be yours, just gave my 2cts on the question. Greetings THOMAS <img src="graemlins/wave.gif" border="0" alt="[byebye]" />

I powder coated my tech wheels black, and I think they look pretty good.

Thanks for the offers; I will indeed pass on a photo for a little "virtual" changes - as soon as I get one!

See, I was all set to take some nice photos yesterday when my wife and I took a run down to the wine growing region (Californians, please do not laugh) near Niagara but alas, the sky clouded over and my photo op. was a no go. Next nice day I'll try to take some shots, including some in profile.

Tangram,

Personally, I'm not too keen on painted wheels. I have seen a speed Yellow 993 with Yellow Cups and it looked a bit too much.

Saying that, my 993 has Graphite coloured Cups (still with the alloy rim around the outside)...I was planning on changing them but they have kind of grown on me.

I would post a picture....if I could work out how

I think they can look good if the car color is light or bright. If the car color is dark or black, I strongly dislike the look of color matched wheels. But that's just my opinion...

Thumbs up

Had Wheel Enhancement paint a brand new set of factory 18" High-Technology Hollow-Spokes Glacier White to match the body of my '98 911 Carrera S. The result: Two 1st-Place Trophies at the Old Westbury Concours d'Elegance last year.

Recently I saw this picture of a 964 with wheels painted in black. The angle is not the best, but gives you an idea. Personally, I quite like it, but am not sure if I'd do that to my car...

Here is one photo I made of my car.

As you can see, top one is the real photo, other 'photos' show you the car 'lowered' and with different set of wheels.

Is there still someone who thinks US ride height looks good?

Now, you see, I quite like that C2(s?) with the partially painted cup wheels. And, it's a dark color. In fact, it looks idential to a car in Peter Morgan's book, "Original Porsche 911". Maybe it's the same car (I noticed the UK plate in the photo; Morgan's book features mostly UK cars).

It remains to be seen if you would get as good a look with a non black/charcoal car though. Nevertheless, I'm enjoying this thread very much. Will get back with a photo or two soon. Pouring rain here still!
