Default Recaro Racing Seat Rant

OK - I went to a reputable local P-car reseller (PAR Porsche in New Rochelle) last weekend and sat in a selection of Recaro racing/sport seats... WTF!

Who were these things made for - the new Lara Flynn Boyle!

I couldn't get any portion of my body into these things. Hips, shoulder, nada! Now, I'm far from petite (5'10", 215, 47" chest) but it wasn't even close! My guess is that if you're north of 150 lbs or 5'8" that you absolutely will not fit. I think even if I was 50 pounds lighter my shoulders still wouldn't have been able to squeeze in there!

Does anyone know how much bigger the XL versions are or if another manufacturer has a more roomy cut.

I am of different proportions (6'2" 180), but found the same thing with Recaros and bought Sparco 2000s. They fit me perfectly and have various models for different hip width. I would try to find a showroom in you area with Sparcos.

I dunno. Let me say this - I'm 5'8" and 135 lb. I fit fine in most Recaros. However, there are some seats that I don't fit in at all. Corbeau Targa RS comes to mind (Recaro SRD clone). My current Sparco Roadster is _very_ narrow and I could use more shoulder room. But every Recaro I've sat in, and I've set in a dozen and own two right now, has always been just fine for me.

I have a question about PAR, though. Are they as big a bunch of a-holes in person as they are via email and phone?

Tech-Law,

Have you tried the Pole Positions? A couple other Rennlisters have them in their cars and they are at least a couple of inches over 6' and maybe around 200.

I haven't had a problem in my GT3/Recaro seats with my 5' 11", 180 lb frame.

I wouldn't call them ******** but I will say that my limited knowledge of the 993 and performance related mods far exceeded theirs. They seemed to know very little about suspension related mods and corner balancing in particular.

I'm continually amazed at these men who make this great subject their lives and then fail to get fully immersed in it... boggles my mind.

Mike S:

Ditto Evan's comments. Major a-holes !!. Can't believe that ANYONE would buy a car from them. Totally worthless.

LOL.

The SPG XL is approximately 1.5 inches wider. I've sat in Sparco evos and Cobras which were quite alot wider than what I've been in from Recaro.

I'm 5'9" 180lbs and fit perfectly into an SPG woohoo!!

I din't know they sell cars. I knew they sold Recaro seats. I first spoke to them about 10-11 years ago (needed a Recaro seat), and it was painful. Same when I talked to them about 3 years ago (needed a Recaro bracket). I had a chance to email them about a year ago about something of theirs on eBay - same feeling. Very strange.

FWIW, I find the SPG a comfortable fit and I am 6'1/180lbs

Mike,

They sell cars mostly on consignment. I tried twice to deal with them, about 2 1/2 years ago on two different cars, before buying my C2. They are extremely arrogant and unresponsive.

During one phone call with Paul, the "owner", I told him that I would fly over to look at a dark blue '97, but only on the condition that he have the service records from the owner for me to review. I knew the car was consigned and told him that he could "black out" the owners name and address. His response? "The car speaks for itself. I won't bother the owner for the service record information. If you don't like the car, don't buy it...."

PAR should definitely go on the forum's "Do Not Use" list.

You would think that they would read the board and be more cusotmer friendly since they advertise their cars in the classifieds here...

Recaros and Sparcos are made in Europe, and for racing drivers, both categories being "slightly" under the average american corpulence ;-)

With sparco, for instance, the EVO seat is a tight fit for the average american butt, but they make the EVo2 for those over 200 lbs. I think there might be an evo 3 even... Check those out as well, though I am sure Recaro will have wide seats.

Tech,

I am far from small - 6'3" and 230lbs and just installed the Pole Positions in my 993. Remember these seats are supposed to be snug (read this as tight!) and there should be no sliding around in them as they are built for the track and high G forces in all different directions. If the seat was any bigger, it wouldn't even fit in the car.

Once I'm in the PP seats they are very comfortable, but I'm planning on switching the seats out after track days as I plan on driving the car a bunch on the street and the getting in and out can be a little of a pain in the *** when running errands.
