Default HID or LED Headlight Conversion

OK, Tore's out of stock and it may take a number of weeks for something new.
So..., anyone did an LED conversion? I don't mind lesser penetration than HID, plus LED is truly plug/play w/ no ballast.
I did a search but not much came up...

I installed a generic HID kit from eBay with the slim ballasts ten years ago. Still working. The entire kit fits into the back of the headlight pod with no modifications and so it is completely reversible. It is not the neatest install as the high voltage wires to the lamp are much longer than needed and so must be tied up in a bundle and stuffed inside the pod.
Be sure to test illuminate any kit you contemplate before installing it as some kits come dead right out of the box. Also, clean any dirt or debris from the inside of the lamp pod as contamination can cause a ground fault to the bulb envelope hindering its ability to ignite.

I have never worked with the LED lamps but my initial impression is the layout of these bulbs is a bit different than an HID plasma bulb or a Halogen filament lamp so there are likely beam pattern differences. If one purchases a kit designed for a 993 this is probably not a big deal.

I have no affiliation with this company and have not tried their product, I just found THIS with a quick search.

Thanks, Andy. LED is OK when installed on projector headlamps but a disaster when used on reflectors. Since the 993 is the 1st aircooled w/ reflector, figure it should be OK; key is to find a bulb construction (the structure behind the bulb) that doesn't stick out so much it can't be fitted into the housing.

Thanks. Prices a bit steep...
Standard halogen is H1, I believe. Am thinking just swap into the same size LED; some of which sells for $20-30; perhaps cheapie to use as a test mule.

eBay HID lamp sets are about $20. Be sure to get the ones that specify for "H1" bulbs and the slim ballast. Also, consider swapping out to blue-tinted halogen bulbs for the high beams so the 6000K HID low beams match to the high beams in color. I found when I installed the HID bulbs set to the DOT aim, some folks in the opposing traffic would flash me so I lowered the beam slightly below the DOT specification and solved the problem. The HID bulbs don't always ignite reliably every time when brand new but after burning in a while the problem resolves itself. In the meantime, I just checked the illumination in the bumper of a car in front of me and flashed the headlamps off then on then both bulbs would light-off.

Don't waste your time with the cheap eBay HIDs. You'll be chasing color problems, flicker, and ignition issues and given that the headlight connector when sliding the assembly back in can be flimsy and a pain to align sometimes, they are nowhere worth the headache. Wait for Tores to come back into stock or buy litronics. You'll end up doing one of those eventually anyway. Like most things the cheap route usually ends up not being worth the savings.

My initial HID low beam upgrade was via DDM, I still have them in the fog lights....9 years and still going strong. I did have very intermittent ignitor issues with one low beam, but a simple off/on again always corrected it. They were very inexpensive, 4500k IIRC. The ballast did fit inside the headlights, not as securely as Tore’s utilizing factory attachment points...but no issues.

I have those DDM HID’s boxed up...you want them to carry you over till Tore Get’s his stock back up...just PM me your address.

Are you doing the Morimoto bi-xenon, 993 retrofit kit from The Retrofit Source?

Use Tore's. It's worth the wait.

High quality product from a good seller that is plug and play for these cars.

Another vote for Tore, he’s a true 993 enthusiast with a superior product. Add Morimoto projectors at any time with LED high beams for full effect.

Much as I want to stay w/ Tore, there is no telling how many weeks or months this will take. I'll look out for when he comes out w/ a replacement product, but until then an affordable stop gap is the solution.

I am a proponent of Tor's 993 solutions. However, the eBay solutions do work and yes one may run into some install snafu.

Contact retrofit source they have everything to set you up. I got set up from them when i re did my headlights

I was recommended to stay away from led bulbs on projection headlights like ours

Hi

+1 on Tore, but in the meantime be sure to get the 4300k and not blue "boy racer" 6500k+

And agree, don't bother with LED

In my opinion....
